The Cowboys and Tony Romo came out gunning in the first quarter. Mixing up running and passing plays, they made their way down field almost at will. The 49er defense had no answers for the dominating play of the offensive line. That was the key for Romo and company throughout the entire first half.
On a few pass plays Romo dropped back and took some long looks before he decided where to execute. On one play Austin was so wide open for so long it looked like the defense did'nt even know he was there untill he made a sliding catch for a 22 yard gain. As the Cowboys were making their final aproach to the end zone Romo threw the ball into traffic and was intercepted. Overall Romo was 11 of 17 for 125 yards passing and lead the team to 195 total yards with 13 first downs, getting the offense into scoring position on 3 of 4 drives.
In the second quarter with the Cowboys backed up to the 49ers end zone, Felix Jones ran thru a generous hole in the line with a burst before he was tripped up by safety Mark Roman for a 13 yard gain. If not for the shoestring tackle, Jones takes it 94 yards for six points. With the help of Marion Barber and Felix Jones the offense drove the ball downfield in 14 plays to score. Jones finished with 23 yards on five carries and Barber 47 yards on 13 attempts.
In the second half third-stringer Tashard Choice gained 55 yards on eight carries before leaving the game after he got the wind knocked out of him.
The Cowboys quarterbacks threw to ten different receivers and gave up no sacks.
The Cowboys defense gained three sacks while the first team Cowboy defense held the 49ers to 36 yards over their first three drives. The San Francisco defense punted the ball six times and none of them hit the video screens. The Cowboys punted the ball four times and three of them landed inside the 20 yard line.
The second half was won by the Niners second team, and that was good enough to take the game by a score of 13 - 20, handing the Cowboys their second loss of the preseason. The Cowboys now stand at 1 and 2 in preseason play, with their final game to play against Minnesota.
The defensive depth for the Cowboys experienced a major set-back when rookie safety Mike Hamlin suffered a broken wrist. Also injured were rookie linebacker Jason Williams (ankle sprain and quad bruise) and third year corner/safety Alan Ball (neck strain).
In the second football game at Cowboys Stadium over 70,000 excited fans showed up and cheered as their Dallas Cowboys showed up on both sides of the ball.
