BLINN QUARTERBACK RETURNS TO THE SEC; COMMITS TO AUBURN

Blinn College quarterback Cameron Newton on New Year’s Eve committed to Auburn University marking his return to the Southeastern Conference where he began his college career. Newton led the Buccaneers to the NJCAA championship in early December and was considered the top junior college recruit in the country.

“I feel that I can come in and be a main contributor for the Tigers on their road next season to the SEC title,” Newton said.

The dual threat quarterback passed for 2,833 yards and 22 touchdowns and also rushed for 655 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2009. Newton graduated from Blinn in the fall and will begin spring semester classes at Auburn.

Newton, a native of Atlanta, served as Tim Tebow’s backup at the University of Florida as a freshman and chose to leave the Gator program after redshirting his sophomore year.
