Club Signs 17-year-old Dominican
HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros announced yesterday that the club has signed left-handed pitcher Edgar Ferreira to a minor league contract. The announcement was made by General Manager Ed Wade.
Ferreira, 17, is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and was signed by Astros Special Assistant to the GM, Latin Operations, Felix Francisco and Astros Dominican Scouting Supervisor Rafael Belen. The six-foot, three-inch lefty will play for the Dominican Summer League in 2010.
“Edgar is someone that Felix Francisco and his staff uncovered long before the July 2 International signing date. In fact, I was able to see him pitch this past February,” said Bobby Heck, assistant general manager/director of scouting. “The Astros had continued interest in Edgar up until the signing date and beyond. Felix and his scouts did a great job of staying involved with this prospect. Felix, myself and David Post, our National crosschecker, had the opportunity to evaluate Edgar once again in October at the Perfect Game World Wood Bat Championship in Jupiter, FL. From there, negotiations picked up, and we were able to find a signing bonus that satisfied both sides.
“Anytime you can add a 17-year-old, left-handed pitcher with a good body that can reach 94 with little effort, it’s a good day for the organization,” said Heck.
