LATINOS AND THE GOP

by Debra Medina, Republican candidate for Governor of Texas

It’s a shame isn’t it, that Republicans continue to ignore Hispanics especially here in Texas? The writing has long been on the wall that unless the GOP begins to better work with Latinos, the GOP will continue to lose races and be a minority party.

It is equally important, of course, for the Latino community to realize that true political identity will be achieved only through participation in all national party structures - Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, etc. We are not all the same and we shouldn’t all be attracted to any one party.

Here in Texas, we have an open party primary because our founders knew the rich culture and political appetite for change would protect what is best for all Texans. It is in this free assembly that we all have a right to participate; no one guaranteed victory, but everyone given the chance to try, to be heard and to influence our society.

Sadly, most Texans and even more minority voters do not participate in our open primary process. The candidates are all too often chosen for the block of party-loyal, election-day-only-voters. The result is usually the nomination of the lesser of two evils, democrat or republican take your pick.

Even worse, Republicans will not even advertise or welcome Latinos during our primary process. But you can bet your money come the general election contest, they will come around with their Spanish phrases and slick ads - que verguenza!

The GOP really need look no further than George Lopez's tear into KBH's vote against Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor to see an example of the seriousness of potential Hispanic voter back lash. Indeed if Republicans here in Texas expect to win this next election, no longer can the GOP not see the disparity between its future and its rhetoric. No longer can the GOP wait until the fourth quarter to include Latino voters. No longer can the GOP be sideways or indecisive on immigration and border security and other Latino interests as both KBH and Gov. Perry have been.

All hope is not lost. It has often been said “Latinos are conservative; most just do not know it”. In fact, many others have said the growing Christian Hispanic community is a rebirth of the Religious Right just in Spanish. How true. And yet how backward the GOP is. With such a natural constituency, why do elected Latino Democrat officials outnumber Republicans 100 to 1?

But We Texans can change this. We can change this by taking an active role in our primary process, Democrats, Independents and Republicans. We can change this by reaching out to Latinos sooner. We can change this by continuing to show our dissatisfaction for the same ol’, same ol’ from our same ol’ same ol’ politicians. Will you join us?

I agree with IronRattler
In my life time only one woman ran on gender and for that reason I lost interest in her and I'm a woman.

Lead By The Nose
I am a Texan whose roots have grown in Texas soil since before statehood. My mothers name is Gonzales. Many hispanics are independant, republican or libertarian by choice, well thought out'supported by research' and fact. While others are swayed by promises that their existance will be made utopian by all the federal giveaways offered by liberals. A great man wrote a wonderful book called "Its O.K. to Leave the Plantation" Written for primarily the Black population it is an eye opening read for hispanics.
Think, why is it wonderful that Sotomayor is on the Supreme Court. Hispanic yes "Puerto Rican", what has she to do with MEXICAN or Texican. What if she were a Spaniard, Brazilian, Portuguese. WOULD YOU TRUST HER WITH YOUR LIFE. Think.
If you take handouts from the liberals how long will they work to keep you down, on the doal, in the barrio"s. Poor mesckins.
Give me a free U.S. with a strong, free constitution, so I can work to better MYSELF and raise my family.
THINK, Why do we come to the U.S. sometime sneaking and with much discomfort and pain but we seldom sneak back.

Busted?
I'll bet KBH never thought she could be labeled a racist.

Texan or Hispanic
Debra Medina, you have already lost my interest. I will be looking for a candidate that is for Texans, not special interests. Whether white, hispanic, black, or any religious group, the call must be for Texas and Texans. The reason for opposition to Sotomyer's rejection by most is her record, not race. I'm not defending KBH in the least. She represents Washington. I'm not against any race of people, but illegal aliens are a problem whereever they originate. Get Real.

Special Treatment?
I got that all she was saying is that we're talking about a conversation here not a capitulation or pandering.

What's wrong with opening up a conversation while still standing firm on your principles? I realize it's been a while since we've seen someone do that, but it's refreshing if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure she's saying that the special treatment that needs to be offered is to talk to them.

Special Treatment?
As long as I have been a Republican, I have yet to see a party platform cater to one race over another. That's because the party is founded on principals rather than identities.

What is great is that the principals apply to everyone, not just one race or group. When the Republicans fight for tax reductions, everyone who pays the taxes get a break. When they fight for law and order, everyone benefits. When they fight for a strong defense, everyone is safer.

I guess a question I would ask is what exactly do you think the Republican party should do to convince Hispanic citizens that lower taxes, better law enforcement, and a string national defense is in their best interests?

Equal treatment of EVERYONE is what is best for Texas and the U.S. Special treatment divides and just makes things worse.
