IRONY OR HORROR: U.S. BOTCHES H1N1 VACCINE WHILE TRYING TO TAKE OVER ALL HEALTH CARE
"I'm worried the virus (H1N1) is getting ahead of the public health system's ability to control it," Senator Joe Lieberman (I)

Is H1N1 Vaccine Being Distributed According To How You Voted?

It seems incredibly ironic that simultaneously the U.S. Senate is attempting to pass Government run health care and investigating the ways in which the U.S. Government has completely botched its oversight of the H1N1 Vaccine?

There are extreme shortages of the H1N1 vaccine all over the U.S. As a result, people are getting sick and they are dying. This pandemic is raging, and spreading like wildfire, and for the first time ever the private sector has been removed from the process of distributing the vaccine.

It has been standard operating procedure in the past for private industry to distribute vaccines that were needed for the greater good of the people. Now, however, with the H1N1 vaccine and the Obama administration in charge, the government has taken over all responsibility for distribution of the vaccine to the states via the CDC. The government has failed so miserably in distributing the vaccine that now the U.S. Senate is investigating their incompetence and possible corruption.

Picture this if you will, right now in the U.S. Senate, The Homeland Security Committee headed by Joe Lieberman (Independent and former Democrat), is investigating the complete and total incompetence and perhaps corruption, as well as the assertions from some that the Obama administration is playing political favorites with your lives, as it relates to one area of health care while at the same time another Senate committee is gathered trying to hammer together legislation that would allow the U.S. government to take total control over all health care in the U.S.

Lieberman’s committee is trying to determine why the U.S. Government so grossly underestimated the amount of vaccine that would be available and why the vaccine may be available when it’s too late.

“It’s moved with alarming speed and took an exceptionally high toll at a time of year when we don’t encounter a high number of flu cases. Flu spikes typically occur in January. We’re in October … and the number of cases is higher than what we usually see at the flu’s peak in January,” Lieberman said this morning.

There are also accusations by some that Blue States are receiving the vaccine in multiples far higher than Red States regardless of population. As an example; Texas, a traditionally Republican stronghold and the second most populous state in the union is ranked at number 48 in terms of vaccinations received.

Is the Obama administration saying that if your state voted Republican then it is okay for H1N1 to kill your kids, or you?

Killing it is.

The CDC reports that 800 Americans have died from H1N1 including 86 children. The virus is far more prevalent in those under the age of 15, but has hit college age adults hard, too. There is also special risk for pregnant women. H1N1 sounds like the government health care plan itself in many ways.

The people of the United States are being told by the CDC and the "Put your health in our hands" federal government that only people with some sort of underlying pre-existing medical condition are at risk of death from H1N1. Now, according to information made available to members of Lieberman’s Senate Committee, we are learning this may not be true.

A Purdue report even says that the H1N1 vaccine may be too, late in coming to do any good whatsoever since most infections of the virus will occur in October. See the Study HERE

Lieberman said today, “I’m worried the virus is getting ahead of the public health system’s ability to control it.”

Fear not, Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano said, "There will be a vaccine for everybody who wants it."  In December.

Welcome to the reality of Government-Run Health Care.

May God Help Us All!

What evidence did you have at the time...
...that the doses were being doled out on the basis of whether states voted for Obama? None!

What basis did you have at the time for asserting that governmental incompetence caused the shortage? Also none!

Now you're asserting a third thing is true for which you have no evidence, but which happens to be the one thing that would make the original claims in your article seem more plausible.

This is known as an "immunization strategy." Unfortunately for you, it's also a move that characterizes the arguments of people motivated by bias.

This is the real truth of the matter. You have "blind faith" that whatever the Obama administration does is inspired by malevolence toward people like you. You constructed an article on that assumption, your assumption turned out to be wrong in this case, and you don't dare acknowledge it.

Is for a story dated 11/06/09 - my article was written on 10/21/2009. My info was correct when written, I will not retract the truth simply because a liar got caught - again - and made changes, or do you prefer "miscalibrations" to lies?

Here's an updated article from Forbes:
Texas is middle of the pack, with 88 doses available per 1,000 residents. Top is Palin's home state of Alaska, with 120, followed by McCain-voting West Virginia with 112. Illinois is third, with 111, followed by Idaho and South Dakota; last comes Hawaii, with only 57 doses per 1,000 residents.

I suppose that a retraction is out of the question...

I don't question the shortage, John.
I'm experiencing it myself.

I'm glad you're retreating from the allegation that the shortage is politically motivated. But you also say nothing in your article that shows that the shortage is attributable to governmental incompetence, rather than, say, a long production lead time (which is already known to exist for ordinary flu vaccines).

Texas receiving relatively few flu doses per head, plus a standard heaped-up helping of abuse at how liberals want a nanny state, is not the kind of evidence you need.

You need evidence of the federal government having amassed significant stocks of the vaccine and failing to get it out to the states. Present that, and I will buy your story.

To all you Government Health Care Lovers:
Regarding Texas ranking at 48th out of 50 states. One of my sources was the Dallas Morning News, the other the CDC. The Dallas morning news article read in part:

“Texas got fewer swine flu vaccine doses than most states
“02:04 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 21, 2009
“By JEFFREY WEISS / The Dallas Morning News

“Texans had less access to the swine flu vaccine last week than residents of all but one other state, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “

I do admit I made an error in asserting that Texas was 48th out of 50 in terms of the number of vaccines received. Texas was actually 49th…only Mississippi got less.

“At 0.7 doses shipped per 100 residents, Texas lagged behind 48 other states and the District of Columbia in the amount of vaccine delivered in proportion to its population, an analysis of CDC records shows. Only Mississippi has received less.”

Want More Facts and/or Sources – here are another 7117 links to articles, and reports from all over the U.S. about the dramatic shortage of the H1N1 Vaccine.

1,000 people have now died. That’s an additional 200 since I wrote the article 4 days ago.

In some rural states the emergency centers and medical clinics can’t handle the outbreak

Your own personal party news service, CBS, says:

“(CBS) A chance to get the hard-to-find H1N1 vaccine produced a polite stampeded of parents - and not too happy children - in Fairfax County Saturday morning.

"Oh yeah, it's definitely hard to get," said a man waiting in line. "This is the only place you can find it right now."

Whole families skipped Saturday morning cartoons and braved the rain - and the line - to snap up 12,000 doses of the drug, reports CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier.”

But, hey, let’s not in any way assert that somehow the government is mishandling this…I honestly don’t know why Obama doesn’t just fly from hospital to hospital and touch the sick or let them merely tug at the tail of his jacket. Why bother with a vaccine?

Seriously, if you don’t see a problem that’s great, bury your collective heads as far into the sand as you please.

Zander, as to the Blue State/Red State question, I never said it was fact. I said, “There are also accusations by some” that this is occurring. It is a fact, that “some are making these accusations” – they may however be complete lunatics.

The article wasn’t about that, it was ultimately how ridiculous the contradiction of the Government trying to handle H1N1 one hand was as compared to an argument from liberal’s, on the other hand, that we should put this same government in charge of health care for all of us.

Since the thought of Obama running your health care doesn’t bother you let me ask you this, does the thought of Sarah Palin running your health care bother you? Or does the thought of a Republican Congress being in charge of all of your health care frighten you?

You see, this is the truth: LOOK IT UP, once the federal government approves this thing it will be in place forever; Regardless of what party is in the White House or in control of Congress they will determine your medical treatment and control your access to health care.

I don’t want Obama deciding my medical care. I don’t want Palin deciding my medical care. I don’t want Gingrich, or Pelosi, or McCaul or Pawlenty or fill-in the blank and put any political party or any politicians name in there…I don’t want it.

You want Obama and the liberal loons to feed you, clothe you and wash your….ears. Guess what, they won’t be in office forever they never are.

So talk up government run health care. Praise it. Perhaps soon you will have it and then ….well then I would normally say you should be prepared to live with it…however, in this case I think “live with it” would not be an appropriate term.

Vaccine distribution
The H1N1 vaccine is being distributed in the same manner that some childhood illness vaccines are. It's an established procedure at the CDC.

The various states were asked to place orders for the quantities they wanted. The CDC lists the doses shipped to the states here: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/vaccinesupply.htm

Texas is 2nd in the nation in doses received, behind only California.

Texas Continues to Order Its Full Allocation of H1N1 Vaccine

Texas continues to order its full allocation of H1N1 vaccine, but the national supply still isn't adequate to meet the public demand.

“We know that the best way for people to protect themselves from the flu is to get the vaccine, but the national supply is still very low,” said Dr. David Lakey, Texas Department of State Health Services commissioner.

Texas had expected to receive 3.4 million doses of the vaccine by mid-October, according to the initial projections from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, the state has received less than 1 million doses so far.

The CDC allocates the vaccine to states based on population and tells states each week how much vaccine is available for them to order. As of today, the state has ordered about one million doses allocated to the state and provided the CDC with information on where to ship those doses. The vaccine is still in the process of being shipped out.

“Given the limited national supply at this point, we want to make sure we use our first shipments to protect those at highest risk of complications from the flu – pregnant women and children,” Dr. Lakey said.

About 12,000 doctors and other health care providers have signed up to provide the vaccine in Texas. The state directed the first shipments to 5,000 providers who serve primarily pregnant women, children and health care workers who provide patient care.

Dr. Lakey said the state hopes to receive 15 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine by mid-January, assuming that production meets initial projections.

“Vaccine will be available to the general public as soon as production catches up with the demand,” he said. “The process is driven by the manufacturers' capacity.”

Also...
Do you have anything, beyond unsourced accusations, to suggest that the Obama administration is in fact denying vaccine to states on the basis of whether they went for McCain or Obama?

One state's data doesn't tell us a heck of a lot. Texas, if you're right, ranks 48th in vaccinations received, but it ranks 39th in vote proportion for Obama. Wouldn't your conspiracy theory require Texas to rank 39th in vaccinations received too?

You must be getting this from somewhere, so at least give us a source for the data for the fifty states. Then we can actually assess whether what you say has any plausible basis in fact.

Isn't it private companies that produce the vaccine?
I thought that this was essentially a technological problem: that there's a significant lead time before a vaccine can be cultured, and that this H1N1 strain started to spread too late for it to be included in the regular seasonal flu vaccine.

For you to be right, governmental bodies would have to be sitting on big stores of vaccines the private companies had produced. That doesn't seem to be the case - nobody, government or non-government, seems to have significant amounts of it yet.

Wish they did. I've got two kids with asthma under the age of 2. I'm calling around every few days to see if some has come through yet.
