BRIT HUME, TIGER WOODS AND JESUS
"All Hell breaks loose" over Hume comment about Tiger Woods and Christianity

For the sake of full disclosure let’s begin with this admission; I’m a fan of Britt Hume. Always have been, even back at his days with ABC. He’s a good solid journalist. Now, he’s under attack. Why? He dared to say that Tiger Woods might be redeemed were he to become a Christian.

Brit Hume made these remarks in a discussion portion of this week’s Fox News Sunday. Here’s exactly what Brit said.

Quite expectedly (by any Christian living anywhere in the world and actually paying attention) Brit Hume has been highly criticized, mocked and worse since making this statement. Why? Brit discusses this himself on last night’s O’Reilly show, “The O’Reilly Factor”.

To see some of the attacks against Brit Hume simply go to YouTube and search “Brit Hume, Tiger Woods”. Some of the commentary is too vulgar for us to publish here.

Mr. Hume may have been speaking metaphorically, but his words were literal and they were the perfect explanation as to why he is now being vilified. Those words bear repeating and understanding:

“It has always been a puzzling thing to me. The Bible even speaks of it. You speak the name of Jesus Christ, and I don’t mean to make a pun here, but all hell breaks loose.”

Literally, “All hell breaks loose”.

Look at this scenario. Man A and Man B are talking. They don’t really know each other all that well, perhaps it’s a party or some other social gathering, and somehow or another Man A happens to mention that he’s a Bhuddhist. Man B is not shocked, appalled nor angered by this statement. Man B may even be curious and ask questions.

Same scenario only Man A says “I’m a born-again Christian.” Man B now either makes an excuse to walk away - quickly - or he accuses Man A of trying to force his beliefs upon him. Anger ensues. Basically, all hell breaks loose.

Let’s look at the Brit Hume /Tiger Woods scenario again. If Brit had said everything he said about Tiger’s need to redeem himself, but rather than speaking the dreaded “C” word (Christianity), Brit Hume had said Tiger should join a “Sex-Addicts Therapy Group” there would be no controversy over Hume’s remarks today.   None!

If Brit Hume had suggested that for redemption Tiger needed to dig deeper into his Bhuddhist faith, there would be no controversy today either.  Nada!

As Mr. Hume noted, even the Bible speaks of this violent and visceral reaction to Christianity, to Christ Jesus.

John 3:20, “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”

The light to which John refers is Christ. Notice the text does not say “Everyone who does evil will avoid the light” or “ignore the light” or “walk away from the light”. John says “hates the light”. Hates.

Matthew 5:11 says, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”

Luke 6:22 - "Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man."

1 Peter 4:14 “If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.”

John 15:18, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.”

Look at the words and phrases used in the Bible to describe what happens to the followers of Christ, to those who speak up in His name:

“Hate”

“Insult”

“Persecute”

“Falsely say all kinds of evil against you” (Evil!)

“Ostracize”

“Scorn your name as evil”

You would have to agree these are harsh terms, despicable words. But you may be inclined to believe that Mr. Hume is experiencing no such backlash. After all Brit Hume is a big shot. Hume is highly successful, a lifelong television news journalist. He’s famous.

Here’s what is being said of Mr. Hume today:

On YouTube – one “citizen” commentator call Brit Hume, “Brit Mu----F----n’ Hume. He goes on to categorize Mr. Hume’s statement about Tiger Woods as “moronic”.

And then there is Keith Olbermann (a flaming liberal) and Dan Savage who Wikipedia describes as follows: “Savage is known for penning the internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love. Savage, who is openly gay, has often been the subject of controversy regarding some of his opinions that pointedly clash with both those of traditional conservatives and those put forth by what Savage has been known to call the ‘gay establishment’”

Listen closely to their words when describing Mr. Hume and Christ himself.

Ellis Weiner of the liberal “Huffington Post” writes the following to and of Mr. Hume today:

“I don't know about you, but I'm very concerned about everyone recovering as a person -- and by "everyone" I mean, "mainly Brit Hume." You kids are too young to remember, but at the start of his career, Hume was an assistant to Jack Anderson, a muckraking journalist who labored day-in and day-out to expose the crimes, frauds, lies, and other symptoms of Washington politics regardless of party. Anderson practically invented investigative journalism. And get this -- he was a Mormon! Nine kids! He thought holding the powerful to account was a sacred duty. What a kook!”

Mr. Weiner goes on to say, “But look at Hume today: morally bankrupt, unable to serve his masters in a manner to which he had become accustomed, and reduced to offering come-to-Jesus advice, on television, to celebrity golfers.

“He has, in other words, arrived at a point exactly the opposite of that of Tiger Woods -- who, Hume says, 'will recover as a golfer' but not necessarily "as a person." Hume, on the other hand, cannot recover as a person until he recovers professionally.

“Therefore my message to Brit is: Brit, when you worked for Jack Anderson you really were doing the Lord's work. Then, well, you went astray. You ended up -- as if you need me to tell you! -- shilling for warmongers, pandering to corporatists, and disseminating lies practically every darn day in the cause of death, destruction, cronyism, ignorance, corruption, and ineptitude. All of which is a fancy way of saying, you became managing editor of Fox "News." And as such, you effected a complete repudiation and betrayal of your younger, more admirable self.”

Look at Mr. Weiner’s words and phrases again:

“shilling for warmongers”

“pandering to corporatists”

“disseminating lies…in the cause of death, destruction, cronyism, ignorance, corruption, and ineptitude” – what a tirade!  Reminds me of something I just read;

Luke 6:22 -  "Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.

In effect, Mr. Weiner now holds Brit Hume, a newsman, accountable for wars and death. Powerful guy, this Hume fellow. (Matthew 5:11 says, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”)

He calls Mr. Hume “ignorant”, “corrupt” and “inept”.

I can find nothing in Brit Hume's past or present that would indicate he is any of these things….except of course that he’s a Christian who dared to speak up on someone else’s behalf in the context of following Jesus Christ. All hell broke loose.

Mr. Weiner also says of Mr. Hume, that he is “Morally bankrupt”. Based on what? Those are brutal words. (1 Peter 4:14  If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you”)

Mr. Weiner then attacks Mr. Hume’s position within the media and his role in his profession by saying that Brit Hume is “reduced to offering come-to-Jesus advice, on television, to celebrity golfers”

“Reduced” as inference that Mr. Hume was once better, before he mentioned Jesus. And “reduced” as in stooping so low as to offer “come-to-Jesus advice”. Mr. Weiner is less offended, in my personal opinion by Mr. Hume’s journalistic endeavors than by Mr. Hume’s lowly, ignorant, corrupt, inept, morally bankrupt mention of the name of Christ. (John 15:18, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.”)

Mr. Weiner could not have attacked Brit Hume more viciously if he had unleashed a pack of Pit Bulls or the hounds of hell. All hell broke loose again.

But why does “All Hell break loose” at the very mention of the name Jesus. Easy answer there Mr. Olbermann, Mr. Savage and Mr. Weiner and all the rest: Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity, the salvation of the world, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and the master of hell hates Him and those who follow Him.

All Hell breaks loose out of fear that someone will come over to Christ. Satan doesn’t get upset if the number of Buddhists in the world increases. He doesn’t get angry if another Atheist steps forward. He’s not even concerned about the casual, convenient Christian who follows the smooth talking Candy Man who scratches itching ears.

Satan is however, very concerned with anyone defending Jesus Christ, or speaking his name positively in public, or the notion of even one more convert to the salvation and redemption offered by Christ and Christ alone.

You see, the world jumps all over guys like Brit Hume because “The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – John 1: 5

I said at the onset of this article that I’ve always been a Brit Hume fan. Now, I really am. More than ever and I say thank you, Brit Hume for speaking up.

God Bless You and to Mr. Olbermann, Mr. Savage, Mr. Weiner and all the rest and to your predictable response to Mr. Hume's heartfelt advice for Mr. Woods, I say thanks for once again only pointing out the truth of the Words of the Holy Bible.

Way to stand firm Brit
We need more Christians to stand up and not be ashamed. As Jesus says, "if you are ashamed of Me here on earth, I (Jesus) will be ashamed of you when you stand before My Father."

Yes!!!
Finally a REAL MAN speaks on TV. Brit stands as an example of where I hope to be: that is one who extends hope and encouragement to anyone in need of redemption and restoration. Tiger and family need just such as that in the times ahead.
Thanks Brit!

I think Britt Hume is AMAZING! Its about time someone bring God and Jesus back into reporting. Good for him! Wish more people would stand up for their beliefs. The world would be a much kinder, nicer place to live.

Hume is very courageous
He knew what kind of heat he would fade on this and stood up for Christ anyway. He is a man whose life shows the fruit of his belief.

Brit Hume Opinion?
There is a place for opinion and a place for new reporting. Mr. Hume made his comments regarding Christianity and Mr. Woods during a segment of the program wherein all the panelists were asked to express their "Opinion" about a topic in the news.

Opinion and Editorials are a long-held right of news organizations and therefore journalists the world over - at least in free countries. You'll note that the heading for this section is "Opinion/Editorial"

Brit Hume newsman?
Brit Hume may or may not be right but my question is, Is it appropriate for this supposedly professional newsman,on a network that claims to be fair and balanced, to offer his religious opinion? I think not. This right wing network claims to be fair and balanced but the reaction of the right wing makes it very clear they are not.

Good for Brit!
As I was watching Fox last night, I couldn't have been more proud to see him talking about Jesus. You never hear the "J" word on TV (unless people are making fun of you for being a Jesus freak). It literally brought tears to my eyes. If only more people would stand up, we wouldn't be dealing with the decline of humanity and moral values in our society. And you know he knew he was going to take a hit from the media for it before he said it...and he did it anyway. Thank you, Brit, for having the courage and for not being ashamed of the name of Jesus Christ!!!
