GULF COAST RESIDENTS BRACE FOR AN ACTIVE STORM SEASON DURING NATIONAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK

Verizon Wireless invests $268M in Texas to support emergency communications

HOUSTONExperts predict heavy storm activity in the Gulf of Mexico this year, and with Hurricane Preparedness Week upon us (May 23-29), Verizon Wireless encourages Houstonians to plan now for the storm season ahead.

Verizon Wireless is working to ensure Houstonians have comprehensive, reliable wireless coverage in the case of severe weather, investing more than $98 million in the Houston area, and more than $268 million in the state to strengthen and enhance its wireless network. Consumers should also take steps to prepare their families before hurricane season arrives:

  • Keep wireless phone batteries fully charged – in case local power is lost – well before warnings are issued. Have a backup battery handy, in the event you cannot get to a local Verizon Wireless communications store for a complementary post-storm charge.
  • Program emergency phone numbers into your phone – police, fire, and rescue agencies; insurance providers; family, friends and co-workers; etc.
  • Consider purchasing your own personal mobile hotspot – like the MiFi 2200– to have 3G access to the internet even if power outages occur.
  • Forward your home phone calls to your wireless number if you will be away from your home or have to evacuate.
  • Remember applications that can make communication and disaster recovery efforts quick and easy. Examples include:
    • Skype Mobile – Make free local and international Skype-to-Skype calls on your Verizon Wireless smart phone to update loved ones on your location and status.
    • Allstate Mobile– Just one of the many home and auto insurance companies that allow you to file claims from the palm of your hand.
    • Google Maps– Find the nearest hotel, restaurant or gas station that can provide comfort and convenience in the wake of a storm.

When a storm strikes or threatens the area:

  • Voice-Enabled Texting/Searching Utilize Google Voice to keep from texting while driving during an evacuation. A free application available on select devices, Google voice allows any person to use the app on any phone (no pre-recording necessary). Also, utilize Google voice to search the web browser on your device and call your contacts.
  • Flashlight – In the event of a power outage during or after a storm, turn your mobile phone into a flashlight with this simple app.
  • Text Plus – Keep-in-touch with family and friends easier during a storm with this group chat application. With unlimited texts, Text Plus allows you to create communities and connect with wireless users on any provider.
  • Power Save Mode Toggle – Conserve the life of your battery with this helpful app. When your battery is low the “power save mode” is automatically triggered and extends the battery’s life.

“Preparation is vital for staying safe in emergencies, and Texas residents have enough time now to plan before the storm season hits,” said Kay Henze, president, Houston/Gulf Coast Region, Verizon Wireless. “Likewise, our teams work all year to prepare, plan and make sure the network stays strong for customers.”
