Because of our particular political system the American government is a reflection of the values, morals, and ethics the American people actually hold. That includes those who refer to themselves as evangelical Christians because no politician could get elected without the “Christian” vote in America. And given the anti-Biblical values, morals and ethics some of our elected officials ascribe to, that truth is a stunning indictment of the state of American Christianity. It reveals the spiritual poverty American Christians have chosen to willfully live in.
Our government legalized the murder of unborn children in 1973 and year after year politicians who make no secret of their pro-abortion beliefs, beliefs that they staunchly defend by voting against any restrictions on this massacre of innocent human life and/or appointing judges that will further solidify the abortion industry’s ability to continue this holocaust, are elected and re-elected with votes from those who have taken the name “Christian.” Yet, they have taken this name in vain.
The homosexual lifestyle continues to gain significant inroads into our culture through movies, TV, magazines, labor laws, and compulsory indoctrination of our children in some of our schools, starting at the elementary level. The success of this homosexual agenda, most vividly shown by the growing acceptance of so called homosexual marriage, is in large part the result of politicians exchanging the truth of the exclusive normalcy of heterosexuality for the lie that homosexuality is also normal. But rather than being ashamed of capitulating to a small but aggressive and vocal minority that is attempting to destroy the moral foundations of this country, they boast of aiding them in pushing America toward the abyss of moral oblivion.
But once again, these politicians do not keep their pro-homosexual leanings to themselves. Thus, Christians are again responsible for putting them into office, knowing they will advance an immoral culture.
Why do Christians do this? Because they vote with their pocketbooks in mind. Of course, heath care is important; of course dealing with the deficit is important; of course curbing government spending is important; of course having a job, food, clothing, and shelter are important. But their importance pales in comparison to obedience to our Lord.
Jesus, aware of the material needs of His listeners told them: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33 ESV). Every time a Christian knowingly votes for a political candidate that is pro-abortion or pro-homosexual, this commandment is broken. Personally, I will never knowingly vote for such a person – even if he could balance the budget tomorrow.
I find it interesting that the mark of the Beast (which I believe is so much more than a mere tattoo or computer chip on/in the forehead or right hand) is given for economic reasons. “Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name” (Revelation 13:16-17 ESV).
So, when someone, particularly those who call themselves “Christian,” vote for a political candidate from purely economic reasons – from the pocketbook – rather than from a consideration of whether this person’s ethics are diametrically opposed to Biblical teaching, they are playing a dangerous game – for themselves and for our country.
