WHO'S REALLY PULLING THE RACE CARD?

I had the privilege of attending another town hall meeting this week, hosted by Congressman Jack Kingston.  He spoke for a while on health care and explained the differences between the democratic HR 3200 plan and the other proposals on the table.  Then Congressman Kingston opened the floor for questions or comments.  The first man to speak stood up and was all for the HR3200 bill.  We were all willing to listen although you could tell most did not agree with him.  He wanted to convince everyone why the health care bill was such a good idea.  He lost his credibility however, when he began tugging on his shirt, leaning forward with his chest, and proudly yelling "for the first time, this president looks like me!"  The man happens to be black.  Why?  Why did he have to do that?

I would have had so much more respect for him if he would have left that statement out.  If he would have just explained why he actually felt like the health care bill was a good idea and provided factual statements to back it up. I would have had so much more respect for his ideas and would have been more willing to listen.  Instead, he decided to pull the race card. He did, no one else did. When people stand against the health care bill, the big corporate bailouts, bills that would infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights, and too much government control, we are called racist.  The fact of the matter is, for the majority of us, race has absolutely nothing do with it.  In fact, if you look closely, there are black people attending these rallies.  There are Mexicans, Latinos, Italians, etc. attending the rallies.  If you think about it and get down to it, I can tell you who is pulling the race card and they won't want to hear it.

In the beginning of presidential elections I came across many people who at first would tell me they were voting for Obama because of what he stood for.  So, I proceeded to ask them what exactly they wanted in a president.  They would typically respond with general answers.  Things like, "Someone who will stand for what I believe in."  Good, I can work with that.  I asked them if they believed in the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms, to protect their family and property.  Most of them said yes.  I asked them if they believe in murder, they did not.  I asked them how they felt about abortion.  Most of them told me they did not agree with it.  Some said they felt it was up to the woman to decide.  I asked them if they don't believe in murder, how then can they believe in abortion.  Anyhow, I proceeded to ask them how they feel about their right to free speech.  They felt that we should always have that right.  I then shared with them that all of these things they seemed to feel strongly about, their choice in candidate stood for the very opposite.  They just stood there, dumbfounded, looking at me not knowing what to say.  I then asked them, "now, really, be honest with me, why did you, or are you voting for Obama?"  What do you think their answer was.  About 9 out of ten black people I spoke to told me bluntly, "I'll be honest with you, OK, I am voting for him because he is black.  I am excited to finally see a black man get ahead and see a black man in this position of power.  I cannot wait for him to get in there and help us out and set the people straight."  Friends, these are not my words, but the very honest answers from people I spoke with, some close friends of mine.  We had very candid discussions in calm, respectful ways.  We would sit and listen to each others points of view.  I learned some things from them, they learned some things from me.
The bottom line is this, they continued to vote for him knowing that his moral standards were the opposite of theirs.  This frightens me, that people would blatantly vote for someone merely based on race.  I am sure many of you have seen the interview with the black lady who was over exuberant with joy after the elections.  The reporter asked her why she was so excited.  She told the reporter it was because she was not going to have to pay for her mortgage anymore!  How did this campaign have people so fooled into believing that they were going to be taken care of?  How on earth did the campaign get people to believe that the government was going to pay their way through life? I have also spoken with white people and other minority groups who voted for Obama.  Many thought that electing a black president would end racial tentions.  Again, is that a reason to vote for someone?  To this present day, most of them are very upset they did.  They felt very misled and lied to.  Many of them truly believed the promises that he made and now realize that he is incapable of paying the way for so many.  That is the view of just some of those who voted for Obama. They too, are upset and are experiencing voters remorse.  Many of these people showed up in Washington D.C. on September 12, 2009 to show their disgust with the actions of this administration.  Let's look at the voter turn out for 2008.

"About 131 million people reported voting in the 2008 U.S. presidential election, an increase of 5 million from 2004, according to a new table package released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. The increase included about 2 million more black voters, 2 million more Hispanic voters and about 600,000 more Asian voters, while the number of non-Hispanic white voters remained statistically unchanged.

Additionally, voters 18 to 24 were the only age group to show a statistically significant increase in turnout, reaching 49 percent in 2008 compared with 47 percent in 2004. Blacks had the highest turnout rate among 18- to 24-year-old voters — 55 percent, an 8 percent increase from 2004. The increased turnout among certain demographic groups was offset by stagnant or decreased turnout among other groups, causing overall 2008 voter turnout to remain statistically unchanged — at 64 percent — from 2004."

From the many people I have talked to, this election was the first election they have ever voted in.  In fact, many of the black people I have spoken with in this area had never even registered to vote until 2008.  They told me they never bothered because they did not feel like their vote would count or that their voice would be heard.  Well, I guess now they now, their vote counts and their voices were heard.  The thing that bothers me the most is that there seems to be a real lack of moral leadership here.  It is not racial to point out the facts that there are not many black politicians in office.  There are some great black leaders and politicians, but for some reason, often times they don't get the funding necessary to carry a strong campaign.  We saw this with Alan Keyes.  The thing that bothers me is when corrupt black leaders lie and misguide the black people just to get their vote.  It seems that the black people want something so promising and so great, but nothing worth while has presented itself yet.  To vote merely on race is careless and dangerous.  There are black leaders who would be great political figures.  Those are the people that should be funded and voted in.  The right black leader, not just "any" is who should receive the vote.  Why did that lady honestly believe that her mortgage was going to be paid for if Obama won the election?  I would like to talk to her today and find out if it has been paid.  If it has, the car dealers might be awfully upset, because many of them have yet to receive their funds from the Cash for Clunkers program.  Because of history I can understand why many might find it difficult to totally trust white politicians.  However, times have changed for the most part.  Granted some racism still occurs.  Some of the racism I see or even experience is coming from the opposite end.  When I moved here, the first two weeks, I was the target of racial slurs from black people I did not even know.  We had not encountered a confrontation of any kind but were merely the target for some uknown reason. I was merely going about my business.  Several times this happened I had my children with me.  Did I deserve it?  No.  Did the black people deserve slavery?  No.  Should we continue to apologize for it over and over again?  No.  We need to move on.  We have to learn how to treat each other with respect and without racial hatred.  Period.  That means from all sides.  When someone votes for a candidate purely because of his race, is that not racist?  Yes it is.  Can you not see that?  What is really scary is when you have a black candidate who has no one's interest in mind but his own agenda and that of his special interest groups, this is only going to hurt the black population even more.  A government that pushes more government creates a dependence on government.  When there is a dependence on government that means you can no longer provide for yourself.  Is that not holding someone down?  Is that not oppressive?  You talk to anyone from a communist country and they will tell you that a government that forces dependence upon them creates a situation of hierarchy and poverty.  Guess who is at the top.  Certainly not the "people".   If black people want to have nothing at all to do with slavery, look deeper into the agendas of the politicians.  Not just the white ones, the black ones too.  The government has become so corrupt that it is almost impossible to figure out who is honest and who is crooked.  I promise you this though, be careful who to trust.  Be careful assuming that because a politician has the same skin color as you he has the same agenda as you.  You may consider doing some research of your own.  Begin doing some research on your local politicians and how they have voted in the past.  Research what groups and organizations they have ties to.  Research who they surround themselves with.  You may also want to research politicians in other states and in the white house.  I also suggest you begin researching the czars that the president has appointed to work for him.  Research them in the same way.  Quit relying one media source.  Look into several sources.  Some other things you may want to look into are special interest groups and large corporations that have ties to the government.  Look at who is on their board.  It is time for every American citizen to quit trusting the media for information and truth.  It is time for every American citizen to start doing their own research and stand up for their individual rights.  It is time for the American people to quit relying on the government for every aspect of life.  Please friends, think about this.  If you are seeing it as a race thing, it is probably because you are dealing with racism within yourself.  The issues that the majority of Americans are upset about are constitutional freedoms of all people.  The general American population is fed up with the government thinking we work for them and forgetting that we hired them and they are to serve us.  "Us", we the people of the United States of America, black, white, brown, whatever your skin color happens to be.  We the people have the freedom to choose, to voice our opinion, to vote, to elect, to pray, to worship, to protect our family and property, and so much more.  Please recognize what is going on here.  Your grandchildren have no social security, our politicians have spent it.  It is gone.  The actions of today affect the generations of years ahead.  We the people have the power, let that freedom ring.  Make Washington go back to work for the American people.  Remind them that they work for you.  Remind them that their vote is supposed to represent what you want.  You have the right to call them, email them, fax them, write them, and even make an appointment with them.  You may find your local congressmans' information at: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/.  May God bless you and may God bless America.

I'm sure you have met people who are voting for Obama mainly because he is black. After all, he got the support of 96% of black people, up from Kerry who got the support of around 90%, and probably not all of that is due to Obama genuinely having run a better campaign than Kerry did.

But this whole phrase "pulling the race card" is really a despicable one. Anyone who even mentions race or racism is accused in the media of "playing the race card". One shouldn't use the fact that Obama is black to argue that people should not oppose his policies, but it is not unfair or unreasonable to identify some of the people opposing him - the people who are holding up signs comparing him to a witch-doctor, depicting him with a bone through his nose, or selling watermelons - as being motivated by racism, or to call them out on it.

Given the history of this country, is is neither surprising nor unacceptable for black people to feel or express to you joy at having a black president. I live in a historically black neighborhood, and was at the community center on election night. There were older black people there with tears running down their faces, overjoyed that finally the day had come when race was no longer a barrier to the presidency. So I feel that you're being unnecessarily prickly about what Representative Kingston said. Let the man feel and express his joy in your presence: it doesn't harm you.

On the issues: Obama has done nothing, absolutely nothing, to limit Second Amendment rights, and has expressed his support for the Supreme Court decision in D.C. vs. Heller. He has supported no bill in Congress to limit gun rights, and no bill proposed by an individual congressman to do so has made it out of committee. Given these actual facts, why do you think people are still thinking that Obama secretly wants to take away their guns?

Similarly, he has made no law to abrogate people's right to free speech. Conservatives may feel like their views aren't getting the respect they once did, but that of itself is not a Constitutional violation.

There are amendments he is violating (4th, 6th, 8th), but the First and Second are not among them.

If abortion and murder are the same thing, then do you support sending women who get abortion to jail for life?

[The black lady] told the reporter it was because she was not going to have to pay for her mortgage anymore!

I could cite counter-examples of ignorant people who voted for Bush; but then, I suspect, you would take offense and feel I was stereotyping Bush voters!

Black people are perfectly capable of evaluating candidates on the issues, and I doubt that they would take well your advice (which comes off to me as somewhat condescending) that they should.

It's natural to us as humans to feel that we ourselves make our decisions based on a dispassionate evaluation of the issues and positions of the candidate, whereas others, particularly those who disagree with us politically, make decisions based on irrational factors. Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that way. Everyone has reasons that seem valid to them for voting the way they do.

We need to move on.

You don't get to decide, unilaterally, when to move on. You may want to move on to a post-racial society, but don't you think black people want to too, and are also tired of dealing with issues of race? The difference is that you and I have the privilege of not having necessarily to deal with racial animosity on a daily basis, because we're in the racial majority. White people are not, on the whole, more likely to die because of the continuing existence of racial animosity in this country; to be denied jobs or promotions; to be given a lower standard of medical care; to be given a mortgage on less favorable terms. Oh, the media seizes on the occasional exceptions, precisely because they are "man bites dog" stories, but they are more rare than cases where dogs bite men.

Of course, then, we're going to find it harder to see why we all can't just move on!
