SLEEPER CELLS AWAKENED, AMERICA TAKEN
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In all my life I have never seen such fear and concern for the future of America as I do now. I have thought long and hard back into my childhood, wondering if there was something I have overlooked. Was there a time when Americans were truly afraid of losing their constitutional freedoms and rights? Was there a time when Americans feared their own government so much that they began building safe houses within their homes, food storage rooms, and making plans for the worst possible scenario? Was there a time in my childhood when the American people feared the government would take over a majority of the industries pushing the nation to a socialistic state? If there was I was not at all aware of it. I would consider myself to be fairly aware of my surroundings and current events. Nonetheless, here we are, the year 2009 coming to an end. Next year will bring us to another election year that has many Americans on edge. Anytime a nation is at war the economy will be unstable as well as the minds and security of the citizenry. However, there is more at play here. Yes, we have a new Commander in Chief that is quite different than any we have had. I am not referring to race or color here either, that is obvious that he is our first president not of Anglican decent. I am excited that our nation was able to move past that hurdle. However, I sincerely believe he was the wrong man for the job. There were and still are, other great choices out there representing other nationalities. Again, so much more is going on in this big picture. Shall we take a look?
We need to travel back in time a bit to see where things began to change. While it is true that there has always been civil unrest in the Middle East, the same is not true for the western side of the world, at least not for the United States. The pilgrims and our founding fathers searched for a land of freedom, a land where they could have freedom of religion, prosperity, and civil liberties. If we skip forward a bit to the pioneer days and a little later, you will see a much different family dynamic than you will today. Looking back in time, the family dynamic was such that the father was most often the head of the home, and the mother was the caretaker and reared the children. The father most often led in spiritual readings and family prayer. The community regularly joined in fellowship and worship services together. In the schools the teachers incorporated lessons with biblical stories and principals. School days were opened with prayer. Most often the students went home for lunch unless it was too far of a walk, in which case prayer was most often said corporately. Fast forward a little more and we are looking at the 40’s and 50’s. Yes, times have changed and technology has come a long way. The family structure for the most part had remained the same. Discipline was also much the same in the home, school, and church. Sure, society had its problems. When did things really begin to plummet though? In 1962 when the atheist mother of six fought to have prayer and religion removed from public school and received a victory, America sustained a most devastating blow. I am sure you will recall Woodstock, the hippie stage, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and feminism. As we separated ourselves further and further from God succumbing to the demands of the atheist and politically correct, we lost control of our homes, schools, churches, and eventually our nation. Look back a little later than the 1970’s and what do you see? We now have homes being led without a father figure, babies born out of wedlock in record numbers, abortions skyrocketing, drug abuse continues, teen sex age begins earlier and earlier, homosexuality became popular, AIDS and STDs are still on the rise, sexual promiscuity, children not showing respect for parents and authority figures, schools losing authority and the ability to discipline, parents losing the authority in the home to fear of being criminally charged, date rape, physical abuse, gang violence, drug wars, and on and on. Are you seeing the trend here? As our youth lose sight of focusing on their futures and making good choices for themselves, they are focusing their desires and goals in other areas. As they watch reality television, multi-million dollar athletes, musical artist flaunting their wealth in material possessions their eyes are set on goals and dreams that are based merely on self-gratitude and social status. Lacking the guidance they once had the youth of today are blindly seeking a life-style void of substance and spiritual discipline.

Meanwhile, across the globe, many youth of the same age in Islamic and rogue nations are focused on something entirely different. The youth of some of the Middle Eastern nations focus their eye on a life-long devotion to Allah. These young boys and girls devote their day to prayer, spiritual training, and training for Jihad. Other young men and women, boys and girls really, who are not training for Jihad, are very devoted to their spiritual studies, to becoming a better Muslim. Their devotion to spiritual studies will most likely put you and me to shame. In fact, not only is this happening in Middle Eastern countries, but it is happening right here in America as well. A high school in Richardson, TX faced a situation with one Muslim student in particular requesting a place to pray. The school, at first, was unwilling to meet the student’s needs and in fact was willing to punish the student for leaving the class room to meet their religious practice of prayer five times a day facing Mecca. You can read the entire story here. I do not want to focus just on the negative. We do have plenty of terrific youth in our nation. It can be difficult to stand out and stand firm against the current in a society that tells you to be the opposite of what you are. Kandy Kyriacou is a Christian and came across a professor who was ill. She asked the professor, while in her office, if she would like her to pray for her. The professor indicated she would like for the student to pray with her. Another professor entered the office and told her to stop praying. Click on her name to see the rest of the story. My point being that Christianity is not supported nearly as well, even in our nation, as Islam is. So while our youth are being weakened spiritually, distracted socially, and decayed morally, Radical Islam is wasting no time in preparing their youth for what is to come. Is it really any wonder that our society is where it is at today? Can we truly blame the terrorists? Can we truly blame those in office? As I am learning, shifting blame away from one self does nothing in the way of solving the problem. Sure, many of our elected officials are corrupt. Absolutely, many of our pastors and church leaders are morally bankrupt. Let us face the facts however, we continue to elect these officials into office, attend the churches, pay the tithes, support the pastors, and do nothing in the way of standing up against what is wrong other than complain. Until now that is. Occasionally it takes a fall to the bottom to realize that a change is needed. More and more Americans are getting involved every day. We have no choice. If we want to regain control of our Republic we must stand for principal and truth. We must stand against corruption and tyranny. As we begin to see more and more of these so-called sleeper cells awaken we will either see America taken by them, or we will rise to the call of duty and be prepared to fight in the spiritual warfare that it will be. In order to see a victory we have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of preparations to make and catching up to do. Our enemy has been preparing. Radical Islamic groups have been recruiting men that are in the prisons. We have lost our way and our ground. Recognizing first, that we, as a nation, have humiliated God by turning our backs on Him; we must repent and pray for the full armor to spiritually fall upon us in a miraculous way, igniting an inner passion and desire to serve Him and Him alone. We must muster up a divine strength allowing us to never grow weary in the fight. We must embrace His holy might and power in facing the darkness that lies ahead. We must welcome robust courage to stand in the face of corruption and tyranny shielded by truth, never wavering. If we are going to protect this land, we must unite as one under His authority and divine leadership and council. Praying without ceasing, we must encourage one another and carry one another. The road ahead is unclear and not yet routed. We must be prepared for anything at this point, as we have allowed our gates to be open and guard to be down for far too long. The security has been breached and our safe haven has been compromised. It is time to secure the perimeter and clean out the house.

Learn the constitution, the history of this country, stay up to date on current events world-wide, and learn about the enemy. You need to know what you should be prepared for and what you should be looking for. The more of us that pull together, the lighter the load will be for each of us to carry. May God bless you and may God bless this great nation, America, the beautiful.

2 Chronicles 7:14 "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

In a sense, Ann, we're all here to argue.
We write columns and posts expecting that others will find them contentious (I mean, "Sleeper Cells Awaken: America Taken"? You really thought people would find that uncontroversial?).

You diagnose a problem of imminent socialist takeover and widespread moral decay.

You seek a solution for our nation in people committing themselves to [the Christian] God and to what [Christians believe] his will is for us.

I question both your diagnosis and your solution; your diagnosis, because it is actually hard to argue that we are morally decayed from our grandfathers' generation, and your solution, because a nation being more religious does not make it more moral. While many people use their religious beliefs as a way to practice more ethical behavior towards their fellow human beings, many non-religious people also find themselves able to behave ethically towards their fellow human beings without a belief in God.

You have every right to say what you say; I've never questioned that right. But there is no right to unchallenged speech, and never has been.

Calling All Christians, NOT Govt
Zander, while I am calling on all Christians to unite and rise above the complacency we have found ourselves in, I am NOT in any way, expecting this nation to become a forced religious Republic. I have never said anything of the sort. I have never said all people must unite, or the government must unite as Christians. I am speaking to the Christian sisters and brothers in America to rise to the call. There is nothing wrong with that now is there Zander? If there is, may I please ask you what happened to the 1st Amendment? I am not calling for any type of government run religious state, or any type of one religion runs all program. It seems you fear any type of freedom, liberty, Christianity, etc. I really do not understand your motives or arguments. It often appears as though you are merely here to just argue. If that is not the case, I truly wonder, why do you want to be here?
Zander, I have no problem with other religions. I embrace them and welcome them. I have many friends who practice many different religions and we all have a mutual respect for one another and get along quite nicely. The one thing we all have in common is that we recognize the need for respect for others, love should be at the center of all things, each person is and should be repsonsible for their own actions, the less goverment invovlvement the better, and allowing capitalism and competition to work promotes positive productivity and a healthy environment.
Living a life centered around God is a life centered around love, discipline, and standards. A life outside of that is a life filled with moral decay.

Well, there's an avalanche of data!
Thanks for stating the source. I appreciate it.

It's a little misleading to report the numbers of crimes committed for non-homicide crimes, when the rate per head of population is a much better measure of the prevalence of crime. The rate of robberies now is comparable to the late 1960s, of homicide to the mid-1960s, and of burglaries to the mid-1960s.

There are two types of violent crime that have unambiguously risen over the period 1960-2008, though they have both fallen sharply since the early 1990s: assault and rape.

For the rape rate, as I'm sure you'll know, there are two big problems with the statistic that rapes have tripled per head since 1960. The first problem is that the stigma associated with reporting a rape has gone down so much since 1960. One would therefore expect part of the rise in reported rapes to be because people are more willing to report them. The second problem is that the definition has changed. Marital rape wasn't even a crime back then; assaults by white men on black women rarely made it into the crime statistics; and "date rape" might not have been classed as rape either. We don't know how those things factor in.

The best thing would be to use the Crime Victimization Survey, but it doesn't go back as far as 1960; all it can tell us is the recent information that only half as many people report having been victims of a rape as they did ten years ago.

That leaves a rise in the rate per head of assault, which is again about triple what it was in 1960. There are definitional problems here too (would someone in 1960 really have reported a punch in the nose to the police?), but not a problem of reduced stigma. So I am fully willing to buy the proposition that assaults have risen since 1960.

There are also regional differences here: I observe that the crime rates are higher in the South than in any other region of the country, so it may be that you all are experiencing less of a decrease in crime than the rest of the country.

For divorces, you should really use up-to-date figures, rather than selecting the early 1980s when divorces were at their peak. The rate was 5.3 per 1,000 per year back then, and is 3.6 per 1,000 as of 2005 (around where it was in 1970, putting paid to your contention that divorce rates have actually risen 40% since the same year; source: www.divorcereform.org). If more divorces then really led to even more divorces now, then the rate now would be higher than the rate then.

While it is your knee-jerk reaction to lash-out at anyone who tries to stand for something good and decent, you really should take your own advice and “make sure that your criticisms are rooted in fact.”

Well, at least we're working with the same data. I am highly critical of Ann's proposed solution of a religious republic, but I accepted explicitly that there are valid things to be concerned about in US culture. Indeed, there always are.

Only when compared to the past that we have known in the country
Zander -

Murder rates have increased only slightly – not declined.

In 1960 there were 9,110 murders in the U.S. in 2008 there were 16,272 murders.

Taken on a per 1000 people average in 1960 that means for every 1,000 residents in the U.S. there were 5.1 murders.

In 2008, there were 5.4 murders per 1,000 residents.

However other violent crimes have increased dramatically.

1960 – Population: 179,000,000

Rape:
17,190 cases

Per 1,000 people: 9.6

2008 – Population: 304,000,000

Rape: 89,000
Per 1,000 people: 29.3

1960 –

Robbery: 107,000

2008 –

Robbery: 441,855

1960 –

Aggravated Assault: 154,320

2008 –

Aggravated Assault: 834,885

1960 –

Burglary: 912,100

2008 –

Burglary: 2,222,196

The source for the above information is the FBI, Uniform Crime Reports.

As to the state of marriage, the divorce rate doesn’t tell the entire story either.

In the early 1980s, the United States witnessed the highest number of divorces ever granted: over one million. This led to an almost predictable domino effect with some of the children of divorce. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the United States experienced the highest rates of teen sexual activity, teen pregnancy, births to teenage mothers, and out of wedlock births in our nation’s history. Today’s new generation is still experiencing the trickle-down effect by being part of the nation’s highest-ever numbers of children born out of wedlock, and numbers of children raised by single fathers and mothers, unmarried parents and grandparents. Meanwhile, the marriage rate in the United States flirts with an all-time low.1
• Over the last several decades, marriage in our nation has declined, while cohabitation, divorce and unmarried childbearing have increased.
• From 1970 to 1996, the marriage rate in the United States fell by a third, from 77 to 50 marriages per 1,000 unmarried women.

• From 1960 to 1998, the number of unmarried, cohabiting couples increased nearly tenfold, from 439,000 to 4.2 million.

• Divorce rates also increased from 9 to 23 per married couples from 1960 to 1980, before declining slightly and remaining steady at 20 per 1,000 through 1998.

• Births to unmarried women increased from 11 to 33 percent of all births from 1970 to 1994, then leveled off through 1999.5

• Nationally, 1.3 million children are born out-of-wedlock each year.

(The data is for the year 2000 unless otherwise noted, and comes from the Chicagoland Marriage Resource Center)

Then there is this, as compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau -

Change Over Time in Divorce Rates

The number of divorced people in the population more than quadrupled from 4.3 million in 1970 to 18.3 million in 1996, according to a Census Bureau report on MARITAL STATUS AND LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

"14% of white women who married in the 1940s eventually divorced. A single generation later, almost 50 percent of those that married in the late sixties and early seventies have already divorced. ... Between 1970 and 1992, the proportion of babies born outside of marriage leaped from 11% to 30%."

Amara Bachu, Fertility of American Women: June 1994 (Washington D.C.: Bureau of the Census, September 1995), xix, Table K. Cited on page5 ofThe Abolition of Marriage, by Maggie Gallagher

"According to the National Center for Health Statitics (1988: 2-5), the divorce rate rose from 2.5 per 1000 population in 1965 to 3.5 in 1970 to 4.8 in 1975."
"No-Fault Divorce: Proposed Solutions to a National Tragedy," 1993 Journal of Legal Studies 2, 15, citing National Center for Health Statistics, 1988, 2-5, cited by Thomas B. Marvell, Divorce Rates and the Fault Requirement, 23 Law & Society Review 544, n.4, (1989).

Divorce increased almost 40 percent from 1970 to 1975.
Brian Willats, Breaking Up is Easy To Do, available from Michigan Family Forum, citing Statistics from National Center for Health Statistics, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Cited in Kenneth Jost and Marilyn Robinson, "Children and Divorce:What can be done to help children of divorce," CQ Researcher, June 7, 1991, pp. 353, 357.

The marriage rate has fallen nearly 30% since 1970 and the divorce rate has increased about 40%.

Ahlburg and DeVita, "New Realities," 4-12. Cited on page 5 ofThe Abolition of Marriage, by Maggie Gallagher

As of 2008, the divorce rate in the U.S. is at 40% -

Sratling, Cassandra (9 June 2009). "Blended families can overcome daunting odds". Burlington, Vermont: Burlington Free Press. pp. 9A.

When the divorce rate is combined with the increased rate in which people are choosing not to marry, and the dramatic rate of out-of-wedlock birth, the venerable institutions of marriage and family are indeed in terrible trouble in our nation.

While it is your knee-jerk reaction to lash-out at anyone who tries to stand for something good and decent, you really should take your own advice and “make sure that your criticisms are rooted in fact.”

Otherwise, it will be easy for those of us who love our country and want better for it, like me, to undermine your message.

I know that the changes ahead seem frightening...
...to you and to many people.

But there are a couple of things worth observing.

First, crime now is no higher than it was in 1960. In fact, over the last fifteen years, crime has plunged.

Second, divorce rates have been falling, and are lowest in the state where I live, Massachusetts. The average number of lifetime sexual partners in the United States is four; in the 1950s, it was also four (albeit starting at the age of 20 rather than at an average age of 17).

Third, the changes you see are, in many cases, changes that a majority of fellow Americans want. They want to see the government offer an optional form of health insurance (majorities in every poll specifically on this subject approve of it). Indeed, about 12% of the nation have a problem with the current health care reform proposal because it doesn't go far enough.

I don't deny the genuine threat from radical Islam. But turning the United States into a religious republic is not the answer. I have personally seen the effects of state-sponsored religion, and went to a school with daily prayer. All it creates is a larger number of unenthusiastic "believers", who say they believe in God because it's what's expected. Why is that a good thing?

By all means, object to the many things about modern culture that make it hard to raise honest and kind children; but make sure that your criticisms are rooted in fact. Otherwise, it will be easy for liberals like me to undermine your message.
