NEW HOLIDAY TRADITIONS - GIVING AS A FAMILY
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As we enter the holiday season I would like to encourage you to consider starting a new tradition in your family.  Seeing as how Christmas is all about the birth of Christ and not any of us I have been a little baffled as to why we get the gifts.  Now I am not trying to take away from the childrens excitement.  However, this could be the year to start a new tradition that teaches and encourages missions and giving.  In our family we usually draw names and then ship gifts or money all across the nation.  This year we have decided that we will be putting our money together and giving to a charity.  Each year a different family member gets to choose the charity.  Either way you decide to do it, this is a great opportunity to set an example for your children that life is not all about us and that we are called to share God's love with others.  Below the scriptures I have listed some links to missions that provide great opportunities.  Of course there are so many more.  May God bless you and may God bless America.

He who gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes from their want will have many a curse. Proverbs 28: 27

Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you. Deuteronomy 16: 17

Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely (without pay) you have received, freely (without charge) give. Matthew 10: 8

Divine Timing!
Fantasic stuff. John, that is awesome, your kids will remember it forever. I did see the Live to Give Column and thought it was great. Thanks for the link to modest needs as well. God bless all!

God Is Good!
Ann -

God is really amazing. Stacey and I decided a few weeks ago that this year we were going to forgo a long, long, standing tradition of both of our families and spend our Thanksgiving serving meals somewhere instead, and that we were going to take our kids with us so they could learn firsthand about giving, rather than always receiving.

Then in Church yesterday we listened to a group from our church who had just returned from a two week mission trip to India talk about all they learned about giving. Today, your column is all about giving, as is Brian Thetford's (Live To Give) and focuses on 1 Peter 4: 8-9.

We also ran a story about elementary kids from an area school who spent their time collecting items to send our Military personnel.

Amazing!

I think God hits us with clustered messages like this because we're all too often so busy that we miss them otherwise. Great Column.

Thanks for sharing this

Last year I filled a modest need as a gift in honor of each family member. Someone got their teeth fixed, someone got their rent paid.
