The Grandmother's Bible, NIV Translation, Zondervan, 2008, Various Authors, 1856 Pages, ISBN-13: 978-0310938019, $34.99
Although I reviewed The Grandmother’s Bible in 2010, after using it for two years I wanted to add some thoughts of encouragement and one criticism to what I’d written. Although The Grandmother’s Bible provides practical tools and ideas on how to pray and grandparent I have a criticism which I elaborate on at the end.
The unique 4x6 photo sleeve feature for the current "Grandchild in Focus" with the sweet face of the grandchild before you is still my favorite. Plus, the grandkids delight is precious when they’re shown their picture and learn when you pray for them.
The 365 devotions, stories and prayer prompts written by well-known Christian women,
Washington’s Karen Kingsbury among them, continues to inspire grandmotherly prayers of love, faith and encouragement. The wonderful ideas for how to be a better grandparent are a special bonus.
The targeted Scripture readings and insightful five day a week devotions add depth to prayers, while the weekends include specific ideas for fun activities. The added ideas for grandparents who live far away called, “long-distance variations” fuel imaginative ways for staying in touch and showing your love.
This Bible is still my favorite and equips me to pass on my legacy of faith to our grandchldren. Or as the back cover copy says, "...helps you give the priceless gifts of faith, wisdom and love only a grandmother can offer."
However, I have to add one criticism passed on by senior readers. While the type is easy-to-read, the two-color design is difficult for older eyes because the blue type doesn’t show up well on the light green background. Scripture pages are also blue ink on white pages which is a bit better, but the sections of devotions, perspectives, book introductions, prayers and talking points that feature the two color design of blue ink on light green is the biggest problem.
If Zondervan publishes another edition of The Grandmother’s Bible I hope they take this small criticism into consideration. I would certainly buy one and recommend senior readers to purchase another copy.
