Sometimes He Whispers, Sometimes He Roar: Learning toHear the Voice of God, by Marilynn Chadwick, Howard Books, 2012, ISBN-13: 978-1451657364, $14.99
Marilynn Chadwick, in the “life and death” moments after 9/11, “when passenger planes became bombs in the hands of terrorists,” partnered with God in a remarkable new prayer journey.
Sometimes He Whispers, Sometimes He Roars is the story of what she learned and how that equipped her to “become the answer to some else’s prayer.”
Divided into six sections, the book’s simple, practical format is easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand and implement. The encouraging narratives of answered prayer within Marilynn’s own family and those God added to her prayer list, fueled Marilynn’s faith in God as she saw her prayers answered. Hebrews 11:6 talks about the importance of belief where it says, “We must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
Still, what makes Marilynn’s inspirational guide stand out from other books on prayer?
For me, it’s the simplicity, personal guidance and clear directions that reinforce faith and trust essential to a relationship of intimacy with the Lord. The author does this by putting “all the pieces together” in what she calls her “Chubby Book,” a spiral bound book of 3X5 cards. Her in-depth explanations of how to develop and use your own “Chubby Book” makes her method practical.
Readers learn what a master prayer list is, who and what to include, how to divide the list into daily prayer themes and what “watchwords” and “prayer triggers” are. Her useful examples clarify any questions that arise. Detailed pictures of her own “Chubby Book” reinforce her explanations.
She also includes “a 21-day prayer experiment” whose primary purpose “…is for Jesus to become more real…and for God’s Word to come alive.” It involves reading a chapter a day from the book of John for 21-days. Readers learn “…to discover how God’s Word… adds power to your prayers—and your life.” This can be done alone or with a prayer partner.
Also includes an eight week Leader’s Study Guide, an “A-List of Prayer Lifeline Scriptures” and an extensive resource list.
Marilynn’s “…step-by-step instructions and tips” teach awareness, specificity, how to pray with authority, agree in prayer, how to be armed for spiritual battle and answer God’s call. On a scale of one to ten, I think Marilynn’s book is a twelve or better. I just bought my first “Chubby Book” and suspect it will only be the first of many.
