SPRING ISD – Hundreds of Spring ISD Child Nutrition workers met at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School Dec. 13 to view the gingerbread contest entries from 38 campuses, and wait for the winners of the 16th annual competition to be judged and announced.

Each year cafeteria workers spend a week or two designing and building elaborate constructions that often break with the traditional concept of a gingerbread cottage. This year’s entries included a castle with a dragon, although the more traditional Santa’s workshop won the coveted people’s choice award. The only criteria is that the entries must be at least 90 percent edible and fit in an area the size of a18 ½ by 22 inch bun pan.

SPRING ISD – Jesus Centeno, a junior at Dekaney High School, recently learned that he has quite a bit in common with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. He didn’t learn it through second-hand information either. Centeno heard it straight from the attorney general himself during his recent visit to Dekaney High School.

Centeno has a disability that requires him to use a wheel chair. The attorney general, who also uses a wheel chair for mobility, came to Dekaney specifically to meet with Centeno and assure him that people in wheel chairs can have long and productive lives. Speaking from personal experience, Attorney General Abbott told Centeno that the more he focuses on pursuing his dreams, the more his concerns about his physical disability will go away.

SPRING ISD – The Spring ISD Education Foundation delivered $26,725 in innovative grants to Spring ISD campuses districtwide during a surprise visit by the Grant Express Nov. 30.

“Our work is to provide grants for teachers so that they can enhance and build upon the lessons, the projects, the activities that they design for their students and their classes. Good teachers always want to do a little more than what has been provided in the budget, a little more than what they had already been asked to do. That is where we come in,” said Stelle Claughton Lacefield, Spring ISD Education Foundation co-president.

Some unique projects that received funding will combine math concepts with physical fitness, artwork with writing and iPads with life skills. One campus will turn a pond into an ecosystem while another turns a nature trail into an outdoor classroom. Job centers at one elementary school and science field trips at another are designed to engage students in learning and enhance their classroom experience.
