Klein ISD students and teachers participate in national educational technology showcase.
Three KISD campuses featured nationwide for technology initiatives

KLEIN ISD - Feb. 1, 2012, has been designated as Digital Learning Day by the Alliance for Excellent Education and the U.S. Department of Education. The Klein ISD was selected as one of the school districts nationwide to participate in this inaugural event.

The program originates from the Newseum in Washington D.C. and is hosted by former CNN anchor Leon Harris and West Virginia Governor Bob Wise. Additionally, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski will participate. The campaign is intended to celebrate exemplary teachers and instructional strategies that maximize effective and innovative uses of technology.

Haude Students Collect Coins for Clothing Closets

The fifth grade students at Haude Elementary completed their annual service project called Coins for Clothing Closets, with proceeds benefiting the Moms Helping Moms of Texas project. Students held a campus-wide coin war and raised $863 to purchase clothing racks and clothes to assist under-resourced families in the Klein community. In November 2011, the students began to collect clothes for the project. Nearly 70 fifth graders, along with parent volunteers, assembled the clothes racks after school then delivered them to Kaiser Elementary, Greenwood Forest Elementary, and Eiland Elementary.

Roth and Frank Elementary Hosts van Gogh Traveling Exhibit

Roth Elementary is displaying a Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit on campus from Jan. 23-27, 2012, for students. The display is funded through a grant from the Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) won by teachers Amy Dietrich (Roth Elementary) and Tim Trammell (Frank Elementary). The exhibit next travels to Frank on Jan. 30, 2012, to Feb. 3.

The exhibit features paintings of Vincent van Gogh and includes a giant reproduction of Starry Night. The replicas celebrate art, the French language, French and Dutch culture and history. This grant allows students to discover ideas and make connections in the artworks using the Feldman Method, an art critique process. Through the KEF grant, a total of eight weekly displays at both elementary schools displaying various artists including: Diego Rivera, Claude Monet, and Katsushika Hokusai, in February; Leonardo Da Vinci in March; Mary Cassatt and Henri Rousseau in April; and a special teachers choice in May.

The 41st annual event is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2012

KLEIN ISD — Tickets for the 41st annual Klein German Festival, scheduled for Feb. 24, 2012, at Klein Forest High School, are on sale beginning on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children (grades 5 and under) and are available at each KISD school, at the Klein ISD administrative offices, and at Trinity Lutheran Church School. There is no charge for preschool children accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Come out for an evening of German food, music and exhibition dances performed by students from Nitsch Elementary and Trinity Lutheran Church schools. The Klein Forest High School men’s choir will present, as well as professional performances by The Henry Tannenberger German orchestra.

Schultz Elementary hosts family activity night to promote healthy living

KLEIN ISD - Four obesity prevention programs in the Klein ISD made school year resolutions to make changes and promote healthy eating among students, faculty and parents. Trim Epps Island Community (Epps Island Elementary), GWF Grizzlies Get Fit (Greenwood Forest Elementary), McDougle Grow Your Own (McDougle Elementary), and Shape Up Schultz (Schultz Elementary) began initiatives as a result of a grant during the 2011-12 school year.

KLEIN ISD - Klein Forest High School had 28 students receive the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification which is a nationally recognized and accredited exam through the National Restaurant Association that covers food safety topics such as sanitation, the flow of food, sanitary facilities and pest management.

“One of the greatest things to see in my classroom is the ServSafe certification wall,” said Audrey Kimich, Klein Forest home economics teacher, who helped students prepare for six weeks prior to the exam. “It reminds my student’s everyday that if they work hard and study, they can be successful at anything they put their minds to.”

Former and current KISD students share a unique kinship

KLEIN ISD - The extent of what parents will do for their child is often limitless. In the cases of former student Ryan Flores and current student Kimmy Witty, it was their fathers who, literally, saved their lives.

Ryan Flores received his father Mike’s kidney when he was just 16 months old, and when he was five Ryan was diagnosed with Stage IV lymphoma cancer. Fortunately, on April 15, 1999, he went into remission. During this time the Flores family recalled the tremendous amount of support they received from their family, friends and Ryan’s teachers at Roth Elementary.

KISD students and staff organize holiday projects for the Klein community

Klein Forest’s student groups have planned several holiday projects: the Ambassador's Program is planning a Christmas give-away on Dec. 17, at the Breen Plaza, Rosslyn Plaza, Inwood Village and Alpha Kids Center communities; students in the International Business Academy (IBA) are having its annual NAM Candy Cane Race from Nov. 28-Dec. 13. The IBA group has donated more than 11,000 non-perishable items to date during the past two years of the event; The African American Heritage Society (AAHS) is collecting Teddy Bears for Cancer to be given to children with cancer, who are in shelters, or that are homeless; dual credit English III classes are hosting a toy drive for The Bear Room at Children's Protective Services; the No Place For Hate club is collecting canned goods and toys to donate to the Willowbend Apartment Complex families who lost their homes in a fire prior to Thanksgiving; faculty and staff are participating in the Angel Tree project to benefit more than 40 families and students in need from the KFHS student body; and academic houses in various parts of the building are collecting toys for Toys for Tots.

Celebration Express bus surprises KISD educators with 11 grants

KLEIN ISD - The Celebration Express launched the giving season as the Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) awarded $77,300 to 10 schools across the district. Since the fall of 2001, the KEF has awarded $1,022,081 in educator grants.

The KEF launched a Be the Spark campaign during the 2011-2012 school year in an effort to fund more innovative classroom grants within the Klein ISD. Due to the generous contributions of business partners established throughout the Klein community, the dreams of KISD teachers have become a reality for students.

Two KISD Campuses to Host World of Respect Event on Nov. 18

Krimmel Intermediate and Mueller Elementary hosts a World of Respect Rally from 9-9:45 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the Krimmel track - 7070 FM 2920, Spring, Texas. The Krimmel K-Rock student leadership team will escort Mueller students to the track where they will be greeted by a victory tunnel and cheers from Krimmel students. Students from both schools will unite to sing a song and perform a choreographed dance routine, then exchange books and mascot banners to be displayed at each of their respective campuses. The Klein ISD police department will also be on hand to provide traffic safety tips to the students.

Klein ISD administrator named 2011 SHSU Distinguished Educator

KLEIN ISD - Dr. Susan K. Borg, the Klein ISD associate superintendent for instruction and student services, was named a 2012 Distinguished Educator of the Year as an administrator by the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) College of Education. The award honors SHSU alumni who have made a significant contribution to the field of education.

“We are thrilled to learn that Dr. Borg has been chosen for this exceptional honor,” said Dr. Jim Cain, superintendent of the Klein ISD. “Dr. Borg is amazingly dedicated to her job, is committed to the achievement of the student as a whole, and has always gone above and beyond what was expected. We in the Klein ISD could not be happier for her and her achievements as she is an outstanding administrator."

Holocaust survivor Walter Kase captivates audience at community celebration

KLEIN ISD - The Klein ISD community gathered to celebrate the first ever Through Your Eyes event at the Klein Forest High School auditorium on Jan. 12, 2012. The district recognized its 2012 Friend of Freedom honorees and the winners of the Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) multimedia student competition.

Keynote speaker Walter Kase shared his trials and triumphs that he faced as a child during the Holocaust. He captivated the audience through vivid details during this time, as well as provided words of wisdom on the importance of overcoming bullying and respecting one another.

Klein ISD Transporter Receives NAPT Special Needs Certification

Karen Holstein, Klein ISD special education coordinator, received the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) Special Needs Transportation (SNT) certification. She is the 17th person nationwide to attain the honor. Holstein took six required and two elective courses to complete her certification, which included a bus roadeo and a trade show of transportation products and services. The SNT curriculum was designed to increase an individual’s specific knowledge about transporting students with disabilities.

Klein ISD Held Academic Decathlon Scrimmage

High school students entered into a battle of wits as the Klein ISD held its Academic Decathlon district scrimmage on Nov. 16, 2011. All four KISD high schools had teams compete, as the Klein High Bearkats team who earned first place with a score of 25,572. All four teams will participate at the regional meet to be held Jan. 20-21, 2012, at the Porter High School in New Caney ISD. The theme for the 2011–2012 Academic Decathlon® season is “The Age of Empire.” The Academic Decathlon is a team competition wherein students match their intellects with students from other schools based on 10 categories.

McDougle Elementary Offers English Classes for Adults

Staff at McDougle Elementary provide English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to adults in the Klein community during both the fall and spring semesters.

Klein High and Klein Oak Select HOBY Leadership Ambassadors

Klein ISD had two high school students selected as Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Ambassadors for the 2011-2012 school year. Sophomores Jinn-Ying “Katy” Jao (Klein High) and Shelby Gagliardi (Klein Oak) were chosen by their campuses for this honor. They will serve as representatives at a three-day event in June 2012 at the HOBY Leadership Seminar held at Texas A&M in Galveston, Texas. Founded in 1958, HOBY programs provide opportunities for today’s youth to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

Hallmark author dedicates children’s book to Metzler students and staff

KLEIN ISD — It is a tale of two huskies, one real and the other fiction. As luck would have it, the real story rests at Metzler Elementary nestled in the heart of the Klein ISD.

The Hallmark storybook Jingle All the Way is written by author Tom Shay-Zapien and tells the story of homeless husky pup, Jingle, and a little boy who needed a friend. Jingle followed the kids to school every day in hopes that one of them would take him home. Coincidentally, the tale mimics that of a husky found at Metzler named Roxee.

Jamie Sookprasong invents wireless charging device during internship

KLEIN ISD — Jamie Sookprasong, a senior at Klein Oak High, spent his summer interning with Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) Consumer Notebook and electrical engineering divisions. Sookprasong became interested in seeking an internship with the company after competing alongside his peers at the 2011 HP Codewars.

During the internship, he was actively involved in the creative processes and had opportunities to interact with professionals across the globe. In addition to his daily projects, he coincidentally designed a wireless charging invention for laptops and electronic devices that is currently undergoing patent review.
