HOUSTON ISD – All Houston Independent School District after-school
events scheduled for today are cancelled because of heavy rains and
potential flooding. This includes, but is not limited to, athletics
events, club activities, and tutorials. School administrators will
decide at a later date whether those events will be cancelled or
rescheduled.
HISD schools will conduct dismissal at their
regular time today. Teachers and staff will be released once dismissal
is completed.
Employees in the Hattie Mae White Educational
Support Center will be dismissed from work at 4 p.m.

Houston Innovative Learning Zone Partnership with HCC would build new
programs at Furr, Kashmere, Long, Scarborough, and Sterling
campuses
HOUSTON
ISD – Students at five Houston ISD campuses would have the chance to
earn associate’s degrees and receive career training in high-demand
technical fields under a proposal unveiled for the HISD Board of
Education’s consideration on Thursday.
The proposal to
establish the Houston Innovative Learning Zone (HILZ) schools is a
direct response to frequent requests from students, and the Houston
community at large, for HISD to bolster its portfolio of Career and
Technology Education offerings.

Historic Houston Church is Packed for the Annual Salute to the Civil
Rights Leader
HOUSTON ISD – Samaya Watson’s delivery and humor
set the bar high for her fellow competitors as she was the first to
stand and deliver in the 16th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory
Competition on Friday. The MacGregor Elementary School fourth grader,
who took third-place honors, challenged the audience to overcome its
fears to speak-up for the oppressed.
Classmates, elected
officials, community members, and HISD educators filled the historic
Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, located at 500 Clay in downtown
Houston, as 12 students spoke on the topic, "As a student of Dr.
King's life, what message of hope do you think he would have for the
world today?"

HOUSTON ISD – HISD District V Trustee Michael Lunceford was
unanimously elected Thursday to serve as 2012 President of the HISD
Board of Education.
The father of two HISD graduates, Lunceford
is a graduate of HISD’s Westbury High School and a Bellaire resident.
Lunceford received a bachelor’s of science degree in petroleum
engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 and is
currently the vice president of engineering for Pedernales
Energy.
In his acceptance speech, Lunceford said he chose to
wear a neck tie adorned with the images of children, instead of a more
traditional “power” tie, to send a message.

Board will also consider 2012-2013 school year calendar
HOUSTON ISD – The HISD Board of Education today will elect new
officers for 2012 and administer the oath of office to trustees
elected in November.
The oaths of office will be administered
during a special ceremony at 11 a.m. in the the Board auditorium of
the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 West 18th St.,
77092).
Newly elected District II Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones
will be taking the oath for the first time. A native Houstonian,
Skillern-Jones attended HISD’s River Oaks Elementary School and Lanier
Middle School before graduating from Aldine Eisenhower High School.

HOUSTON ISD - Houston Independent School
District officials are
monitoring weather conditions and responding
accordingly.
Evening classes at Liberty High
School, located at 6400 Southwest
Freeway, have been cancelled due to high
water in the parking lot and
on roads surrounding the campus. Notifications
have been sent
directly to staff and students.
HISD will not cancel
after-school
events. However, individual schools can make decisions
based on what is best
for the campus based on reports of conditions
near individual schools. Schools
have the capacity to communicate
directly to students, parents and staff.

District Continues Delivering Promises Made During 2007 Construction
Campaign
HOUSTON ISD – Thousands of students at 15 HISD
elementary schools are already enjoying their new campuses and many
more will too as the Houston Independent School District completes six
new campuses in 2012 and expands 10 more in time for 2012-2013.
These new campuses were made possible by the $805 million bond
referendum approved by voters in 2007. HISD continues to fulfill each
commitment made to the public in 2007, said HISD Superintendent Dr.
Terry Grier.

Superintendent Terry Grier will Visit Two Top Teachers
Today
HOUSTON ISD – Students across the Houston Independent
School District achieved unprecedented success in the classroom in
2010-2011, and the educators most responsible for the gains will
receive their financial awards today.
HISD is paying a total of
$35 million to 12,390 campus employees under the ASPIRE Award program
that aims to recognize those whose hard work resulted in students
making more progress in one year than their peers
elsewhere.
HISD students showed significant academic progress
in 2010-2011. The number of students not just passing, but scoring at
the tougher “commended” level on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and
Skills has never been higher.

HOUSTON ISD – HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier today will visit
Lyons Elementary students, staff and parents to celebrate the campus’
designation as a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School. This award honors
public and private schools whose students achieve at very high levels
or have made significant progress toward closing gaps in achievement
between students in various racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
Challenge Early College and Eastwood Academy high schools are also on
the list of HISD’s 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Five HISD
schools have been nominated for the honor this year.

The 16 annual oratory contest takes place at Antioch Missionary
Baptist Church, Downtown
HOUSTON ISD – Twelve HISD schools
offer their best student speakers to honor the memory of Dr. Martin
Luther King through speech. The 16th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory
Competition takes place today from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the
historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. The church is located at
500 Clay Avenue, in Downtown Houston. The inspirational message and
well-honed delivery of these students has become a Holiday tradition
in the city of Houston.
“Dr. King demonstrated that the power
of the spoken word can have a profound effect on how we view our
world” said HISD Superintendent Terry Grier.

Houston Texans Cheerleaders and Other Team Representatives will Attend
Today’s School Board Meeting
HOUSTON ISD – The Houston Independent School District is
rallying around the Houston Texans as they continue their inspiring
run in the NFL playoffs.
During a regularly scheduled meeting
with central office staff earlier this week, employees asked
Superintendent Terry Grier to allow employees at the Hattie Mae White
Educational Support Center to dress in Texans team attire on Friday,
January 13 to show support for the team before this weekend’s playoff
game against the Baltimore Ravens. Dr. Grier loved the idea, declaring
Friday “Houston Texans Spirit Day” in HISD.

HOUSTON ISD – Classes for Peck Elementary School are cancelled for
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 due to issues related to flooding. Classes
will resume on Wednesday January 11, 2010.

HOUSTON ISD – On August 30, 2011, the Houston ISD transportation
department was asked to review general conditions on a school bus that
transports students with special needs from Thompson Elementary
School. As part of this review, HISD officials viewed security videos
from the bus.
One of those videos, filmed on August 25, 2011,
appeared to show three male students engaged in inappropriate
activity. On August 30, the Thompson Elementary principal notified the
parents of the students who were involved. In addition, the Houston
Police Department and Child Protective Services also were notified and
HPD took the lead on the criminal investigation.

Deadline arrives this Friday
HOUSTON ISD - Houston Independent
School District officials remind parents that an important deadline
for magnet programs arrives this week. Magnet applications must be
received by Friday, January 6, 2012 for the first application period.
Parents who desire for their children to be considered in the
first phase of the selection process must either deliver the
application to the school of your choice by the close of school
business on Friday January 6th or mail the application in time to be
postmarked by January 6th.
