FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD students are among 230,000 Texas
students who will benefit from a $100,000 grant from the State Farm
Youth Advisory Board to Junior Achievement (JA) of Southeast Texas.
State Farm Agent, Darryl Mayo, presented the grant award to Rick
Franke, president of JA of Southeast Texas, during a check
presentation on January 26 at Ridgegate Elementary School. The grant
will help fund JA’s financial literacy service-learning project, “What
A Difference A Day Makes,” which allows high school students to serve
as role models to younger students in their communities while sharing
important knowledge about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and
free enterprise.

FORT BEND ISD - Employees of Home Depot in Missouri City recently
volunteered their time and supplies to help prepare a Band Storage
Room at Hunters Glen Elementary School. The Home Depot team
constructed and hung shelving units in the room so that the band
students can have a designated area to store their instruments instead
of carrying them back and forth to class each day.

FORT BEND ISD - The Clements High School Fine Arts Department presents
Urinetown, the Musical on February 2, 3, 4 and 6 at 7:00 pm in the
Clements High School Auditorium (4200 Elkins Road, Sugar Land,
77479).
Urinetown, the Musical is a story of a fictional place
that has been suffering a drought for 30 years. One man, Caldwell B.
Cladwell, sought to control the use of water by purchasing all the
public amenities while making everyone pay to use them. During that
same period, the legislature banned the use of private toilets.
Suffice it to say, this man became very wealthy as the poor suffered
more and more until one young man, Bobby Strong, convinced the
suffering poor to rebel against Cladwell and the corrupt government
officials.

FORT BEND ISD - Members of Fort Bend ISD's Junior Student Leadership
Program explored leadership in Community Volunteerism during the
second session of the program. With visits to the CASA House, Project
SMILE/Bethel Outreach Ministries and the Fort Bend Corps, students
learned about the leadership roles that are needed to orchestrate the
daily operations of providing services to children and families
throughout our community.
During their trip to the CASA House,
the leadership class learned about the path of an abused or neglected
child who enters the child welfare system, and the many services and
programs that are available to children through CASA House and Child
Advocates of Fort Bend. Ruthanne Mefford, Executive Director of Child
Advocates of Fort Bend; and Metoyer Ellis, Program Director of CASA
House, led the students in a role-play activity that revealed roles of
the various volunteers who advocate on behalf of abused and neglected
children.

FORT BEND ISD - For an evening of dining and fun with Travis High
School seniors, mark your calendars for Sunday, January 22, for the
ProGrad Senior Serve Dinner and Auction, which will be held at Safari
Texas, located at 11627 FM 1464 in Richmond. The seniors will be
dressed in costume, and the tables they serve will be decorated to
reflect a theme of their choice.
Ticket prices are $25 each and
may be purchased on Thursdays and Fridays in the Travis High School
Commons during all lunches beginning January 5 through January 13.
Table sponsorship with business advertising is available for $500.

FORT BEND ISD - Twelve First Colony Middle School students were named
winners of the UpCity Chronicles Writing Contest, sponsored by author
Andrea White. The contest asked readers, writers and illustrators to
help describe the Upcity Chronicles world featured in White’s trilogy.
Contest participants submitted their entries in written form or
through illustrations (or a combination of both) on questions
concerning mind games, telekinesis, futuristic animals and time
travel.
The winners were: Zionah Browne, Mia Johnson, Lauren
Koop, Paige Lary, Jessica Liu, Andrew Min, Zill Momin, Ameena Pervez,
Sana Rehman, Connor Sistrunk, Sabrina Thomas, and Natalie Turcott. All
are students of English teacher Genia Goulet and librarian Mary Font.
As contest winners, they received copies of White’s books (Radiant
Girl, Window Boy, Windows on the World, and Surviving Antarctica) for
their classroom.

FORT BEND ISD - Parks Elementary School hosted its first
Posada (a
celebration of the Nativity) in December that welcomed
students,
their families, and staff members for an evening of pure
entertainment. The celebration included cultural dances, musical
performances, traditional dishes (including home-made tamales and
flautas), and the breaking of piñatas.
“The Posada gave our
school neighbors and families a great
opportunity to celebrate our
unity and have fun, while supporting our
school,” said Rosy
Martinez, fourth-grade Bilingual teacher. “We hope to
make the
Posada an annual event for families to enjoy.”

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD has joined the Fort Bend Regional
Council on Substance Abuse, Inc. in forming the Fort Bend Community
Prevention Coalition. The group is comprised of individuals and
organizations that support drug-free youth and represents 12 sectors
of the community. The 12 sectors include: civic or volunteer,
community, business, government, healthcare, media, parent, religious,
school, youth-serving, and other organizations involved in reducing
substance abuse.
The Coalition’s mission is to prevent and
reduce youth substance abuse by building healthy school and community
environments. The Coalition also seeks to become a Drug Free Community
grant recipient and be awarded federal funds to support its efforts in
substance abuse prevention and reduction.

FORT BEND ISD - The Fort Bend ISD District Student Advisory Committee
(DSAC) will host the Third Annual High School Quiz Bowl Contest on
Thursday, February 2, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Wheeler Field House
(16403 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land). This free event will give FBISD
high school students the opportunity to test their knowledge of the
2012 Diversity Conference theme, “Peace, Love and Respect.” Teams of
four students (and one alternate) representing all FBISD high schools
will compete in the Quiz Bowl. The winning team will be presented with
the Trophy award for their school and announced as the District
Championship winner at the High School Diversity Conference on
February 24, 2012, at the George Ranch Historical Park.

FORT BEND ISD - The Willowridge Mighty Eagle Band, under the direction
of Sybil James, received 1st Place honors in the Red Division at the
2012 All-American Battle of the Bands held on January 14 at W. W.
Thorne Stadium in Aldine. Also, the Wings Dance Team and Willowridge
Drum Majors both won 1st place in their respective divisions at this
invitation-only event.
The band received a trophy and a $1,000
prize.

FORT BEND ISD - On Thursday, January 26, Fort Bend ISD will host its
annual Band Bash Concert at 7:00 pm in Wheeler Field House, located at
16403 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land. The event showcases the talents
of beginning band students from the District’s K-6 elementary
campuses, including: Armstrong, Blue Ridge, Briargate, Glover, Hunters
Glen, Jones, Lantern Lane, Quail Valley, Ridgegate and Ridgemont.
Admission is free. Come and support the efforts of these talented
musicians from FBISD’s elementary band programs.

FORT BEND ISD - The George Bush High School Bronco Band Brass Quintet,
led by band director Rod Soto, performed before an audience at a local
nursing home. Eleazar Hernandez, Chris Masch, Casey Nwachukwu, John
Colmenares and Kyle Russo volunteered, on Sunday, December 18, to
perform before approximately 90 residents of Park Manor of Quail
Valley, a nursing and rehabilitation center.
The quintet
extended warm wishes to the residents, saying “it feels good to bring
you the gift of music and to give back to the community.” Band
Director, Rod Soto, also performed a few tunes on his tenor saxophone
and told the audience that although this was their first performance
at the facility, it wouldn’t be the last. “We want to make this an
annual event,” Soto said.

FORT BEND ISD - The Seguin Elementary School community is focused on
good health thanks to the “We Are Family” fitness and nutrition
program introduced at the school this year. Designed by Sylvia
Caycedo, school nurse, the program is funded through a School Nurse
Childhood Obesity Prevention Education (SCOPE) grant from the National
Association of School Nurses and the UnitedHealth
Foundation.
The program was developed to promote lifelong
wellness among students, families and staff by helping them develop
healthy patterns of exercise and nutrition while encouraging
participants to lead healthier lifestyles.
