CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL - Eighth grade students were in Washington, D.C., last week for their annual trip. Upon returning, CCS' head of school, Mr. Steven Novotny, received an email from Mr. David Ripley, Former Captain and Combat Veteran in the U.S. Army, complimenting students during their visit to Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Ripley writes: "I understand that your school had a tour of young students in the nation's capitol this past week and that you accompanied the students. I was a guardian with a tour of WWII veterans from the State of Oklahoma, and the paths of these two groups merged in Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

"Let me say that these students were so well behaved, gracious, and polite that it reflects well on your school and on your student body in general. Of particular note was that they reached out to a group of men and two women veterans and expressed their thanks to these representatives of what has been referred to as the Greatest Generation.

Cypress Christian Chamber Choir Tied for Top Performing Choir in State

The Chamber Choir received a Superior Rating at TAPPS State competition, but it does not end there. Not only did the choir receive more I’s than II’s, but every judge gave the choir a Superior Rating, resulting in a perfect score. Moreover, because the choir chose the most difficult pieces (Grade 5), the group was awarded the maximum points possible for a Large Ensemble in the competition. Only one other high school scored on level with our choir, making their group and ours the top performing choirs in the state!

Happy 34th Birthday, CCS!

On April 10, 2012, CCS turns 34 years old! In looking at the history of CCS, it is evident the founders of our school were motivated by a high calling. From the board minutes, to the constitution, to the by-laws, and to the policies, it is obvious that the men and women who founded CCS were operating out of conviction, not convenience, and viewed private Christian education as a commitment, not a commodity. They knew it would take a great investment of time and resources for the school to thrive.

These founders loved children and understood the biblical mandate of recognizing that Christian parents have ultimate responsibility for their children’s education. They also understood that the investment of these parents would be returned many times over in the lives of their children, who would benefit from a distinctly biblical worldview unavailable in the public schools.

This year, 54 eighth graders participated in the CCS Science Fair. The primary goals for students were:

Eighth grader, Jace Basford, recently participated in the annual Cypress Christian School Science Fair. For some students, this would be just another assignment – another project to complete. Not for Jace! He chose to report on a subject dear to his heart and one he could relate to on a very personal level. Jace’s science fair project was a reflection of his love for skimboarding and his desire to help others with cancer. When Jace was in elementary school, his father was diagnosed with cancer. “It was scary,” says Jace, “but my dad is now cancer free and I am so thankful.” He gives God the credit for providing wise doctors and the special treatment his father needed.

In recent years, Jace has used that experience to help others with cancer through the Skim2Live organization, a non-profit group in Cypress, TX, consisting of skimboarders and breast cancer advocates. Although skimboarding is mostly associated with the ocean, it is becoming a popular inland sport, similar to skateboarding where people skimboard off of PVC platforms and rails. Jace and the Skim2Live group skimboard in northwest Houston on Cypress Creek.

Cypress Christian School sixth grade students hosted the annual Living Wax Museum on March 9, 2012. The event was the culmination of the sixth grade biography unit.

Each student read a 150 page biography about a "Hero of the Faith" or a "Hero of History." The students then dressed as the subject of their biography and delivered a short monologue describing his/her life. It was an exciting hour of history and faith!

Novotny Run 4 Fun
Running with Head of School Mr. Novotny

The 2012 running of the Brandon Vick Memorial Run-4-Fun was another great CCS event. The Stadium at Cypress Christian hosted three great races on Friday, March 9 before the rain really started to fall.

The cold wind and rain did not slow down the runners as 234 officially took the track and covered a total of 543.5 miles in the 90 minutes of running.

As a school, we completed over 20 marathons and that does not include the laps by parents, teachers, and Mr. White. Students learned a valuable lesson in what it means to overcome adversity and finish well and they had lot of fun making it a memory.
