CYFAIR ISD — National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the
American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated the
week of Feb. 6-10, 2012, to focus public attention on the unique
contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school
systems.
The theme of this year’s Counseling Week is “School
Counselors: Helping Students Be Brilliant.”
The special week
honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors
who are a vital part of the educational process for all students as
they meet the challenges of the 21st century.

CYFAIR ISD — The Board of Trustees expressed its appreciation for the
support of Harris County Municipal Utility District Nos. 136 and 183
on Tuesday by approving interlocal government agreements between the
MUDs and CFISD for funding the installation of playground equipment at
Wilson Elementary School.
MUD No. 136 will fund $50,000 and MUD
No. 183 will fund $15,000, while a third municipality—Rolling Creek
Utility District—has already donated $5,000 to go toward the funding
of a brand-new playground complete with adult fitness equipment and
landscaping at the 29-year-old campus.

CYFAIR ISD - CFISD’s winners in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
(HLSR) School Art Program were recently announced. A panel of judges
from the HLSR organization made their selections on Wednesday, Jan.
11, which have been taken to Reliant Arena for the next level of the
contest.
Of the 613 entries from CFISD students, a total of 11
winners were selected in the High School, Middle School and Elementary
divisions that will be displayed in the Hayloft Gallery at Reliant
Center during the HLSR, Feb. 28-March 18.

CYFAIR ISD — The CFISD Food Service Department invites students,
parents, faculty and friends to sample the latest products available
in school cafeterias during the Annual Food Tasting on Thursday, Feb.
9 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress
Road).
Community members are welcome to attend and enjoy a
variety of foods made by potential district vendors while providing
input on the new products available for school lunch and
breakfast.

CYFAIR ISD - The Langham Creek High School girls’ basketball team
hosted its first Shoot for a Cure breast cancer awareness game on Dec.
16 against Stratford High School.
The team held a bake
sale complete with
a pink lemonade stand and breast cancer awareness
station, and also
sold t-shirts. The girls wore pink basketball
shoes and pink eyeliner
for the event.
Langham Creek head
coach Annette
Steward said senior player Rebekah Douglas initially
approached her
about putting on the event, so she put her in charge
of it. Teacher
Kristi Crawford, who lost a dear friend to breast
cancer, served as the
coordinator of the event, which raised $800 to
go toward Causes for a
Cure, a 501(c)(3) charity to help find the
cause of breast cancer.

CYFAIR ISD — Cypress Falls High School teacher Janice Reed was
selected last month as a 2012 honoree of the Texas Exes Award for
Outstanding Teachers, sponsored by the University of Texas Alumni
Association and the College of Education at UT.
Reed, who
teaches Latin and English at Cypress Falls, is one of only 10 high
school and two elementary school teachers in the state to receive the
award, which Reed will claim during an awards ceremony at the AT&T
Executive Education and Conference Center on the UT campus Feb.

The annual award is given to teachers in Texas who
represent the best in the teaching profession.

CYFAIR ISD — Bob Hull, the principal at Truitt Middle School, was
named the principal at Cypress Ranch High School on Dec. 20. Hull
began his new leadership assignment on Jan. 3, replacing Darlene
Medford, who announced her retirement last month.
Hull has 34
years of experience in education, including 19 in CFISD. He has served
as the principal at Truitt since 2004, with prior experience as the
associate principal at Cy-Fair High School, an assistant principal at
Cypress Falls High School and an administrative intern at the
Instructional Support Center. Hull also has served as a teacher at
Cypress Falls High School and Memorial High School in Spring Branch
ISD and as a campus athletic coordinator at Albright Middle School in
Alief ISD.

CYFAIR ISD — Nine CFISD students have won 10 Gold Key awards in the
2011 Herff Jones Quill and Scroll Yearbook Excellence
Contest.
The professionals serving as judges selected 214
national winners among the 1,505 entries evaluated. Judges commended
the heightened creativity of the winners, as well as the fine
reporting, in-depth captions and strong visual packages of the winning
pieces.

group of schools to receive the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Award, recognizing excellence in
nutrition and physical activity.

CYFAIR ISD — The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the Calendar
Committee’s recommendation for the 2012-2013 instructional calendar
during its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Jan.
17.
House Bill 1 mandates that instruction for the school year
may not begin before the fourth Monday in August. For the 2012-2013
instructional year, the earliest start date is Aug. 27—which will
serve as the first day of school.
In the fall of 2011, a
district calendar committee was organized with broad-based
representation, including teachers, parents, campus administrators,
paraprofessionals, ancillary personnel and district-level
administrators.

CYFAIR ISD - The Houston Rockets will team up with
Cypress-Fairbanks
ISD for a fundraiser to benefit school libraries when
they hold the
Dribble-A-Thon on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
at the
Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road).
Children of all
ages are invited to
register in the fun event, in which participants
will engage in various
activities including dribbling courses,
passing stations, a pop-a-shot, a
cha-cha-slide, mingling with
Rockets mascot Clutch and other contests.
The registration
fee is $25, which covers a basketball, t-shirt, certificate and a
ticket to one of three Rockets games:

CYFAIR ISD - Cypress Creek High School senior golfer Matthew Dunn set
a North Course record at BlackHorse Golf Club by shooting a 61 in an
18-hole second round to win the Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) Q
School
Challenge Jan. 7-8.
Combined with his first-round
score of
74, Dunn won the event by 12 strokes with a two-round total
of 135. His
masterful second round included seven birdies in a
row.
“It’s a very special round for Matthew
to do
something like that,” said his coach at Cypress Creek, Philip
Franklin. “I’ve watched him grow as a player, and he’s always been
really good at shooting at the flags. He’s always had the capability
of
doing something special like that.”

CYFAIR ISD — Cypress Creek High School student James Parker was one of
21 winners in the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)’s annual Yes
I Can! Awards.
The Yes I Can! Awards have recognized thousands
of children and youth since the program’s inception in
1982.
The winners are nominated for their outstanding
achievements in the categories of academics, arts, athletics, school
and community activities, self-advocacy, technology or transition.
Parker was chosen for transition, highlighting his accomplishments in
employment, vocational training and independent living skills.

CYFAIR ISD — The CFISD Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) Presidents
Council Fund Raising Vendor Fair will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21,
2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Berry Center (8877 Barker
Cypress Road).
Open to the public, the PTO Vendor Fair is an
opportunity to preview many fundraising options and speak directly
with company representatives. All interested parties within and around
CFISD are invited to attend.
All district-approved fundraising
vendors have been invited to the PTO Vendor Fair to display their
products.
