GALVESTON, TX – Mardi Gras! Galveston Umbrella Brigade participants have been challenged to beat a new world record for the largest choreographed umbrella dance during the 101st Mardi Gras! Galveston on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 8:30 p.m.

Mardi Gras! Galveston’s Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade needs 1,500 participants to secure the world record.

January is going to be hot as a jalapeno at Traders Village as the Cy-Fair Go Texan Subcommittee dishes up two days of spicy chili, barbecue, brisket, and chicken to benefit the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The 23rd Annual Cookoff is being held today and tomorrow and will feature more rootin' tootin' "trail cooks" than you can shake a chili ladle at. Saturday's competitions include Jackpot Pinto Beans, Junior Chili, Jackpot Chili, Fajitas. Sunday will feature entries looking to be named the best in Chicken, Pork Ribs and Brisket categories.

Lam quit his job as a financial analyst in San Francisco, packed his camera and took off around the globe. Lam combined 6,237 photographs into the time-lapse video.

HOUSTON, TX - The 5th Annual Rory Miggins Memorial Irish Stew Cook-off & Music Festival is calling for cook teams, sponsors, volunteers and attendees on Saturday, February 11th from noon to 6 p.m. at Lucky’s Pub located at 801 St. Emanuel Street at Rusk.

Proceeds benefit the Houston St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Cook-Team Entry is $50. Admission is $10, children under 12 free. New this year: Vendors and Irish History booths.

The indoor/outdoor venue honors the late local Irish-American Rory Miggins, an entertainment entrepreneur and his commitment to his Irish Heritage.

Zoo Will also Close Early on Christmas Eve at 3 p.m.

HOUSTON - The Houston Zoo will be closed on Christmas Day. Keepers will work abbreviated shifts on December 25 cleaning exhibits and feeding the Zoo’s 6,000 animals. The Zoo will reopen December 26 observing the standard 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. operating hours. Christmas Day is the only day of the year the Zoo is not open to the public. The Zoo will also close early at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with the last guest entry at 2 p.m.

“A zoo is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation. We’ve arranged shifts for our keepers to ensure that all the animals will receive their regular care and feeding but still give the staff time to enjoy Christmas with their families,” said Zoo Director Rick Barongi.

Meet Santa December 19 – 23; Enjoy Special Music Presentations at 1 p.m. Each Day

HOUSTON, TX - Santa Claus is coming to town and he’s making a special stop at the Houston Zoo. Zoo guests are invited to bring their cameras and their gift wish list and meet the jolly guy himself at the Zoo Reflection Pool from December 19 to December 23 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Parents please note: Santa may need to take a couple of short breaks each day to check on his reindeer.

The fun doesn’t stop with Santa. At 1 p.m. at the Reflection Pool each day Zoo guests are invited to enjoy music of the season. So, break out the cameras and don’t miss a chance to get the perfect photo of the family with Santa to post on Facebook, proudly display on the mantel, or add to your holiday cards. All activities are included with your paid Zoo admission or Membership.

HOUSTON, TX - Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program (SAP) is hosting a Cupid’s Country Boogie Dance Tuesday, February 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Humble Civic Center, 8233 Will Clayton Parkway. The afternoon dance for adults, ages 50 and better, features the River Road Boys. Light refreshments will be served, but alcohol is not permitted at county-sponsored functions.

Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4–8, 2012, is an all day, five-day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs and mixologists, shopping, and live music. HOUSTON, TX - What would you do with 15,000 pounds of snow?

When we think of winter in Houston, we have visions of snow and snowmen, but the weather rarely cooperates to create a winter wonderland.

We can’t guarantee snow for the holiday season, so the Houston Zoo is taking matters into their own hands. The Houston Zoo and Sunny 99.1 are creating a Snow Day!

On Saturday, December 17, 2011 the lawn next to the Houston Zoo’s okapi habitat will be blanketed with 15,000 pounds of snow. From 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.  Zoo guests invited are to play, build snowmen and win cool prizes. Snow Day is free with your paid Zoo admission or Zoo Membership.
