Lamentations 5:1-22

Why do you forget us continually;
why do you abandon us
for such a long time?
[Lamentations 5:20]

For 151 verses, except for a brief respite in chapter 3, the writer of Lamentations has poured out his sorrow. Judah has fallen to the Babylonians. Jerusalem has been destroyed and the temple decimated. The people have suffered terribly, with many taken into exile.

Lamentations 4:1-22

It was because of her prophets’ sins,
her priests’ iniquities,
those who shed righteous blood
in the middle of the city.
[Lamentations 4:13]

Earlier in Lamentations, we saw that the Lord caused Judah’s grief “because of her many wrong acts” (1:5). More specifically, her prophets gave “worthless and empty visions,” which did not reveal Judah’s sin and lead the nation to repentance (2:14).

Lamentations 3:31-66

We should lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven.
[Lamentations 3:41]

For the last several days, I have been mulling over the question “What enables us to keep on trusting in God’s faithful love when our lives are stung by suffering?” I’ve pointed to the encouragement we receive from Scripture, from Jesus Christ, and from Christian community. Today, I want to offer one further way to hang in there with God during difficult times.

Lamentations 3:1-30

The memory of my suffering and
homelessness is bitterness and poison.
I can’t help but remember
and am depressed.
I call all this to mind—
therefore, I will wait.
Certainly the faithful love
of the LORD hasn’t ended;

Search for the LORD and for his strength;
continually seek him.
[Psalm 105:4]

Psalm 105 calls God’s people to give him thanks and praise in response to his “wonders” (105:5). The bulk of the Psalm highlights God’s special work with the Israelites, beginning with the covenant with Abraham and focusing on the exodus from Egypt and movement to the Promised Land.

Lamentations 2:1-22

My Lord has become like an enemy.
He devoured Israel;
he devoured all her palaces; he made ruins of her city walls.
In Daughter Judah
he multiplied mourning
along with more mourning!

The LORD is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
For he knows how weak we are;
he remembers we are only dust.
[Psalm 103:13-14]

Psalm 103 underscores our weakness, our limitations, our “dustiness,” but with good news. This psalm celebrates God’s multifaceted goodness to us.

Like our ancestors, we have sinned.
We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!

Lamentations 2:1-22

My eyes are worn out from weeping;
my stomach is churning.
My insides are poured on the ground because the daughter of my people is shattered,
because children and babies
are fainting in the city streets. (CEB)
[Lamentations 2:11]

I don’t like whining. As a parent, I was adamant about not allowing my children to become whiners. They were free to express their negative feelings about something they felt to be unfair, but endless griping and grousing was unacceptable.

Lamentations 1:1-22

that I had no comforter.
All my enemies heard about my distress; they were thrilled
that you had done this.
Bring the day you have announced
so they become like me! (CEB)
