Map of South Asia, where temple prostitution still takes place.

KARNATAKA, INDIA - Imagine living in a society in which you are judged by your station in life, determined by your birth, rather than by your individual worth or accomplishments.

As a member of the lowest rung of society, you can barely keep food on the table for your wife and two daughters. Such is the situation in most of South Asia, according to one ministry working in the region.

"When your wife becomes ill after giving birth to a third daughter who, unlike the son you had hoped for, will be an unbearable financial burden, you have only one choice: You must dedicate your daughter to the goddess as a devadasis, a temple prostitute," writes Kate Taylor on the website www.go2southasia.org .

The latest round of Jordanian sponsored talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority have concluded without any apparent progress. Both parties made initial proposals of some sort, although precise details were not released due to Jordan’s demand for discretion. Israel claims the Palestinian proposals consisted of nothing but old, recycled positions. President Abbas, on the other hand, said the talks are at an impasse because the Israeli proposals lack a “clear vision” on borders and security.

“We pray this does not turn into a squandered opportunity,” says Rev. Dr. Bruce Chilton, Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College and Fair Witness Executive Committee member. “The Israelis and Palestinians can take these opening positions -- which is all that the parties were supposed to be presenting in Amman -- and proceed from there to meaningful negotiations.

But how true are they?

GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA - (ANS)- It was a surreal scene when in 1982, along with Brother Andrew, the author of "God's Smuggler" and others from his ministry, Open Doors, I visited the Presidential Palace in Guatemala City to meet with President Efrain Rios Montt, the only Evangelical to hold such high office in Latin America at that time.

Montt had just come to power in a Oficiales jóvenes ("young officers") coup d'état, while he was working with El Verbo Church [Church of the Word) that was run by Gospel Outreach, an evangelical Pentecostal church with headquarters in Eureka, California and Guatemala.

GFA conferences
Conferences like these are rare chances for Christian women to fellowship with others beyond their local church.

SOUTH ASIA - The other piece of the puzzle when it comes to raising up leaders in church ministry and outreach, Gospel for Asia-supported pastors don't only look to the men in their congregations. They believe the women are just as important in bringing the Gospel to their communities and beyond.

GFA's Women's Fellowship groups help women grow in God's Word, learn to share His love with their neighbors and receive basic education that may have been denied them as young girls.
