Club removes right-handed pitcher from 40-man roster

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros announced today that right-handed pitcher Chris Sampson has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple A Round Rock. The announcement was made by General Manager Ed Wade.

Cougar softball begins first of four fall camps with pitching camp on Sept. 5

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball program announced that room is still available for the Cougar Pitching and Catching Camp slated for Sunday, Sept. 5.

Cougar Pitching & Catching Camp is designed for those interested in improving their fundamentals of pitching and catching. Pitchers will engage in numerous drills to implement correct fundamentals, increase accuracy, and increase speed. Catchers will participate in drills to improve throwing, blocking and framing.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Five distinguished former University of Texas student-athletes and a current staff member will be inducted later this fall into the UT Women's Athletics Hall of Honor, the Women's Hall of Honor Committee announced Wednesday. The 11th Longhorn Women's Hall of Honor class includes: Erin Aldrich, dual-sport All-American in volleyball and track and field who claimed four NCAA high jump titles; Kathleen Bogue Cummings, tennis All-American and the 1984 Southwest Conference Player of the Year; Jo Beth Palmer, dual-sport All-American in volleyball and track and field; Carol (Borgmann) Robertson, three-time AIAW swimming individual national champion and 18-time All-American who led Texas to two AIAW national team titles; Eileen Vanisi, three-time NCAA shot put champion; and Tina Bonci, long-time Co-Director of the Division of Athletic Training/Sports Medicine for UT Athletics.

HOUSTON, TX — Yesterday right-handed pitcher Brian Moehler underwent successful lower abdominal and groin surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bill Meyers at the Hahnemann Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA.

Moehler is expected to return to his home in Georgia before rejoining the team in Houston at the commencement of their next homestand on September 9. His recovery period is expected to be approximately six weeks.

Red Raiders face SMU and UC Davis on Friday and Texas State on Saturday

LUBBOCK, TX - The Texas Tech football team is not the only program on campus with SMU on its mind. The Red Raider volleyball program, in the midst of its second of three non-conference tournaments to start the season, travels to Dallas this weekend for the SMU Tournament to face the host Mustangs, along with UC Davis and Texas State.

Mustangs Rally From Two Goal Deficit

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team opened its season with a come-from-behind 3-2 double overtime win over the Missouri State Bears at Westcott Field Wednesday night. Freshmen Zach Barnes and Juan Castillo scored in regulation for the Mustangs, and sophomore T.J. Nelson tallied the game-winner.

Midfi elder Zach Barnes started the Mustang rally by scoring on a header from 30 yards out, just 37 second in to the second half. It was Barnes' first career goal in his first collegiate game. Fellow freshman Juan Castillo followed up the dramatics with his first career goal in the 88th minute to help send the game to overtime.

Sam Houston State University begins its 95th season of football Saturday, Sept. 4 when the Bearkats kick off against the Baylor Bears at Floyd Casey Stadium (50,000) in Waco. The Bearkats own a 51-39-4 record in season opening games. Sam Houston has won 10 of its last 12 season openers and owns a 16-8 record in opening games since moving up to NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) play in 1986.

HOUSTON, TX— The Houston Astros recognized Hall of Fame broadcaster Milo Hamilton for 65 years in broadcasting during the pregame ceremony prior to yesterday afternoon’s 1:05 p.m. game at Minute Maid Park.

As part of the ceremony, former Astros greats Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio joined Astros Chairman and CEO Drayton McLane in presenting Hamilton with a custom-made shadowbox containing photos and a vintage broadcaster’s microphone.
