RICE BLANKS STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 6-0

Pitchers Sharp In Team's Seventh Shutout of the Season

HOUSTON -- The Rice baseball team combined seven shutout innings on the mound from junior starting pitcher Andrew Benak with some steady offensive pressure for a 6-0 victory over visiting Stephen F. Austin Tuesday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.

When Rice opportunistically opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning after a SFA fielding error, that would be all the room Benak and the Owl bullpen would need on the night. The junior right-hander worked into the eighth for the first time in his career, scattering seven singles and a walk while striking out eight. He and relievers Zech Lemond and Matthew Reckling teamed to keep the Lumberjacks off the scoreboard for the team's seventh shutout of the season.
