They then used their research data to develop digital stories, written compositions, slideshows and study sheets to share with their district peers via video conference equipment. Students at Drabek, Palmer, Pecan Grove, and Oakland Elementary Schools held various video conference sessions to share their projects with other FBISD campuses. Austin Parkway Elementary School students also participated in the research portion of this learning experience.
TRAVIS STUDENT, AVANTHIKA GOPAL, TAKES ACTION IN HELPING COMMUNITY

FORT BEND ISD - Travis High School student,
Avanthika Gopal, is all about action. She isn’t one to sit on the
sidelines and watch things happen, but rather a natural-born leader who
is working to make a difference.

Two years ago, Gopal started a Red Cross Club at her school. The idea
came to her after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that left more than
283,000 people dead and destroyed homes and property in 11 Indian Ocean
countries. Seeing news coverage following the disaster and learning
about the Red Cross’ timely efforts to assist those in need motivated
Gopal to take action in her own hometown.

SARTARTIA MIDDLE SCHOOL'S THEATER DEPARTMENT DONATES PERFORMANCE PROCEEDS TO CHARITY

FORT BEND ISD - Sartartia Middle School presented Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by
Jerome McDonaugh, at their campus in February and earned $1,888 from
ticket sales. In their usual generous spirit, the theater decided to
donate the proceeds to the Parks Youth Ranch, a non-profit organization
that serves at-risk and homeless youth by providing a safe, supportive
and structured environment to address family situations.

“One of our goals this year was to use one of our plays as a
fundraiser for charity,” said Megan Wallace, Sartartia Middle School
Theatre Teacher. “When we learned about Parks Youth Ranch and their
mission to help homeless teens, it just seemed to fit. In the play,
Alice struggles with finding her way and finding herself; the kids at
the Ranch are also struggling to find their way.
